Thanks for the analysis. Yes in fact the servers are reporting the group as not existing. I tried subscribing to one of the problematic groups in the three other modes but got the same result. Looks like I should check with Newsfeeds itself next. Thanks a ton Alex!

I'm using UE with Newsfeeds.com's servers. For just a few groups, I find the group within the group list and it's properties indicate that six servers cary it with say 50k posts on each server.
