950 million boneless headers (from giganews) gzipped is about 21 gigs. Unzipped, well... the only way to handle a file that big is not to have it all in memory at once... you have to just have a view of a small slice of it at a time.

there is no rule in usenet that says a filename has to match a subject line or vice versa. you may have thought you were only downloading a movie, but one of the pieces could very well have been a virus.

I don't think alt.binaries.nl indexes incompletes. If I do indexing, I'll probably use nget as a backend, and get headers from EN, and nget can determine which ones are complete, though I'd probably also display the incompletes, but marked as such. I don't know for sure, but I don't think that would work because the articles are expired on the server and that triggers removing them completely in the program.
