NewsPro FAQ: When searching these forum is just too slow

Post by dengle »

Added "too many connections q/a"

Here's a starter to a Q and A FAQ for newspro that will hopefully alleviate many of the common questions people ask. It's based on posts from these forums. I'll be editing it/adding to it as time permits. If anyone has any suggestions, tips, or problem resolutions, feel free to add!
-----------------------------------------------------
Find enclosed a list of Frequently Asked Questions (a.k.a. FAQ) about Newspro. Topics such as basic operations, filter questions, XPAT (server-side article searching), conflicting software, slow operation, etc will be touched upon.

Q: I want to filter headers for <insert criteria here>.
A: There are several posts regarding filtering. You can make custom filters in Newspro under Edit -> Edit Filter.
Wildmat support has been added to the filtering
Examples:
Spam Filter
Search results for "filter examples"

Q: I am experience file corruption, my headers are messed up, files are saving with messed up names and other odd behaviors related to headers and attachments in Newspro.
A: Most likely you you have a firewall installed such as zoneAlarm. Try disabling/uninstalling the firewall as a test to see if that fixes the issue (see THIS thread for some examples of what a firewall can do to your usenet feed.

Q: Newspro slows to a crawl when downloading headers in groups with a high article count. My hard drive is running constantly, but I'm the bandwidth usage is almost zero. Why and what can I do to fix it?

A: You most likely have, under Edit->Properties->tasks, "Prevent Overload" enabled. If this is not enabled, and you still are having slow retreival, then it's quite possible that your system's hard drive could be causing the slowdowns. Newspro can be very hard drive intensive. If you have a hard drive with a slow access speed, then it may cause such slowdowns.
Other links discussing header and general newspro slowness can be found below:

An example of how eliminating the hard drive bottleneck affects speed can be found in THIS thread.

So if you're using an old ATA/33 5400 RPM drive, perhaps it's time to upgrade ;)

Q: My usenet server currently allows n connections which I have set in the server properties. However I still receive too many connection errors. How can I fix this?

A: There are several possible resolutions or explanations to this issue.
  1. many servers have multiple ip addresses associated with the name. For example, news.giganews.com actually has 3 different ip addresses. You can add each of those ip addresses as a separate server and set the appropriate number of connections for each.
  2. if it does not happen all the time, it could be a temporary issue with the server. Only time can resolve this issue.
  3. Newspro can treat the error message as a recoverable error. in properties->general, recoverable errors add suitable wildmat expression.
  4. Under Properties -> General, try unchecking "Keep Alive"
  5. enter serveral seconds connection delay in properties->servers (per server basis).
