NewsFeeds Settings

Post by voripteth »

I remember reading an article that Lunat!k posted about optimum settings for NewsFeeds. Unfortunately that was on the previous board where we no longer have access.

Any chance that information could be posted here? Pretty please!

Sure!

A few pointers from Tha*Lunat!k maybe...

I have had few problems with speeds, though my connection is only 640kbps. Also I do not frequent many large groups, actually no "large" groups in the sense most people do. I have a few that I keep on regularly, but for stuff like VCDs I just search Binnews and run XPATs. Keeps my database small.

Here is how some of my important settings go:

Properties > General

Read timeout: 2400 seconds - A high value is helpful for XPATs, otherwise NewsPro may try to redo the XPAT even though the server was still processing commands on its end. This is especially important for Newsfeeds since a few XPATs in a row that don't get a chance to complete will quickly return errors of "Too many connections" or "Already connected on host".

Closesocket()linger: 0

Retry failed articles every: 20 minutes

Fixed hdr.dat & del.dat: neither

Autosave per: 120 seconds

Recoverable errors: too*many|license*expired|connection*limit|411*key (not sure if those are all necessary, the license and key should be left in though for Newsfeeds)

Exceeding download limit: download*limit|quota

Suspend server for: 90 minutes

Properties > Tasks

Total tasks: 15

Article bodies: 4

Posting: 1

Hard tasks total: 15

New headers: 8

New newsgroups: 5

Download later: 3

Download immediately: 12

Extra task slots: 4

Bandwidth limiters or overload restrictions: none
Properties > Servers

Maximum tasks, all servers: 3 (Newsfeeds, Easynews, ISP, free)

Retries, all servers: 3

Delay, all servers: 0

ISP & free (and reliable) server priorities: 6 (ISP strict)

Newsfeeds priority (main): 4 (all strict)

Newsfeeds priority (special: exe, mp3, etc.): 3 (all strict)

Newsfeeds priority (BinaryKiller): 5

Easynews priority: 2

Newsfeeds subsets: 1 or 2, at random pretty evenly amongst servers. BinaryKiller has no subset.

Retention (all): Natural

Properties > Post

Encoding: yEnc

Split large messages (UUE): 12000 lines (not recommended, use 7000-9000)

Split large messages (yEnc): 5000 lines

Word wrap: 73 characters

Hope this helps

And remove any subset stuff since they don't make you use 'em anymore :)

The part I'm particularly interested in fixing is a message I get from NewsFeeds complaining that I'm access it with more than 4 connections at once.

Make sure you don't have your read timeout value set too low. Also if you run XPATs, if you cancel one while it's executing or if the timeout is too low and NewsPro ends it then you'll need to wait a while before the connection is actually closed on the server side.

I think there must be something weird going on at Newsfeeds. I have the server set a three tasks, downloaded a single article and still got the message about having more than 4 connections. This was without using any XPat.

If you have the check for aliases disabled (properties->general) - maybe they mapped 2 servers to the same IP address without changing the connection limit and it causes the problem (use the Windows hosts file instead to provide direct IP mapping based on http://www.thalunatik.com/newsfeeds )

Adult-East is currently routing to Adult-West if I remember correctly.

Lunat!k's suggestion on read timeout may be the solution to several people's 502 errors on Newsfeeds. I have mine set for 5 seconds (down from the default of 30) and I get this error on one server or another a few times a week. I'm going to set it back to 30 and see if performance improves.
