Newbie trying to figure out searching

03 Oct 23: One server was relocated, the server currently doesn't have a public IP address since in the meantime it is running on starlink. I wrote some additional tunnel code running separately to handle this. When the server is engaged the connection is 5600+ days uniform (since around 24 July 2008). In the unlikely case I disengaged the server because of some problem the retention is 1200-3800 days depending on newsgroup. If you experience any issue please let me know.

29 Nov 23: Because of encrypted and obfuscated posts flood mass posted by a few nzb indexing websites using usenet servers as private storage for their members to download the posts - the situation with the content is pretty chaotic since their purpose is to post in such a way, so users must use their website exclusively, when the website disappears - the encrypted posts just eat usenet providers' hard disk space uselessly. If you can't find something specific please let me know at alexbirj at gmail dot com what exactly you can't find for me to check how it is possible to retain the posts. Non-obfuscated posts shouldn't be affected at all, let me know if you notice anything missing.

29 Nov 23: The search protocol had to be upgraded to extend 3 byte (16M+) limit on the server side for number of sets per instance, so at least the version 5.8.3 is needed to access it, otherwise should be no any difference.

Newbie trying to figure out searching

Post by arsby »

On my 15 day free trial, trying to see what UE search can do.

I want to search for posts of any subject that were in alt.binaries.erotica during the last 2 days, and were between 300MB and 600MB, omitting posts from a poster called yencbin. Is there a way to do this?

Well obviously there is only 4 fields in the search options:
Subject, Author, Groups and days/dates
Author could be set to "^yencbin"
Groups could be set to "alt.binaries.erotica" and days/dates to "<2"
The problem is that I think Alex did not allow the subject to be just "*" like for "any" subject or left blank in case of a negation in the Author field.

Thanks for your reply. I was hoping that there might be some advanced search options. I guess there aren't any.

Heh, maybe Alex will comment on this.
Well, perverts allways find a way
I, myself keep up-to date a virtual adult group containing that a.b.e and it seems most interesting stuff come from the same bot, i.e robo@c*ck.com with UHQ in subject.

as to size you can just use quick filter or create a size or more complicated filter in the filter editor and apply it to the search results view.

collections are not always clearly defined so filter by size doesn't always work, even as could be easy for server to prefilter by size as it is now, it can be done on the client size, the result what you see is the same.

NoNo, I search for UHQ in a.b.e. all the time.

Alex, with the understanding that the selection won't be perfect, how can I select only those sets where the size is between 300MB and 600MB.

Oh that one is easy, and it will work as intended in the search results:
Just put in the Quick filter bar in Size: "300000-600000" or "307200-614400"
You can create an initial filter for the search results so it always appears like that and toggle it when needed.

For that quick/filter to work in others view you need to create a composite filter or else you'll end up with unwanted size collections...
