I've just got my registered copy of UE but I can't do searches. Whenever I try to search I get the message:
"Search Failed.
The search server protocol has been changed, please
upgrade to the latest version".
Can somebody please help me out here? I'm new to UE so please be gentle.
I am using a registered copy of v1.9.7
Edit: BTW, under General Options tab there is a section for searches but it doesn't have any options to change search protocols or server.
Search tells me to upgrade search service protocol.
you need to allow UE to download search service configuration from http://www.netwu.com/ue/ <search service configuration file> (it is the ue website in fact).
probably your firewall blocks access.
the rationale is so the search service configuration can be changed without making a program release.
i also could add a manual option to download configuration manually and then load it as a file or paste it as text but i didn't have any consistent requests and besides apart from accessing www.netwu.com to download the configuration ue needs to access the search service itself to make searches not mentioning news servers, so no reason (or i don't know something) why permissions couldn't be set for it to download search service configuration from the ue website. it is only needed once after the configuration has changed or when you reset (it means deleted) it in properties->general.
the change in the configuration yesterday (actually it is the first time i changed it, originally it was just pointing out to the old server) was for increasing retention.
the configuration contains only search service coordinates and the checksum, nothing more there.
but the message box tells it all, it mentions the firewall.

Could you tell me what I need to do to "allow UE to download" that file? Where on the website can I get the service cofiguration file? I can't see any link to it.
Do I need to open a port or do I need to download that file and apply it somehow? If so, which port and what is name of the service I need allow? Am I right in assuming it's "UE.exe" or does the search go by a different name?
All I have under General Options for Usenet Indexing (search) service is:
a textbox for "Group Kill Filter" and a button saying "Reset Configuration".
If I press Reset Configuration it says:
"Search service configuration has been deleted. Please ensure UE can access UE website to access it. This is only a panic button".
Thanks.
Edit: I have setup a rule on my firewall to allow outgoing access via TCP on port 119 but I still get the same problems. Do I need to open 2020? Do I need to open it for ingoing or outgoing?

You need to allow UE access to port 80 (UE website) in order to get the config file. In fact you can allow just access to www.netwu.com on port 80.
The file UE needs is at http://www.netwu.com/ue/uesrv.txt.
It depends which firewall you're using but it should pop up asking if you want to allow/disallow access but maybe you already predefined some rules for UE.

Melazz:
Only outgoing access, UE is not listening on any ports.
I've sent you what you need to have open through pm (can you open access on per site basis?).
If there will be more such requests I'll add configuration details button with this info in properties.
Actually for UE you can allow full outgoing access, apart from search and accessing news servers if you don't need check for updates uncheck properties->general->check for updates (but it only reads http://www.netwu.com/ue/version_reg.htm ), there is no verification server, the search service also serves only its direct purpose, the program is autonomous.

Well my firewall/router is a netgear FVS338. It lets me setup a service based on the port number. I have setup a service for ports 2020-2022 and set it to allow input always. That hasn't fixed the problem. I setup another service for port 80 and that didn't fix it either. But come to think of it, port 80 must be open anyway mustn't it?
I have even set these services up to be allowed for both ingoing and outgoing but the problem persists.
My router doesn't let me setup rules by site.
Thanks. I hope we can get this going soon.

i have no idea, something is messing with the content you get through 80th port?
try to search again, i added LF character after the configuration line, if it doesn't work, when you go to the link http://www.netwu.com/ue/uesrv.txt what do you see?
another question, if search gives error, what error message do you see when are trying to make a search? the one mentioning firewall, error updating search service configuration?
