Automatic Shutdown of Windows - when tasks are finished

Post by woezzel »

I've been using UE for a couple of months now and I'm really satisfied with it.

Now I wanted to start using some of its more advanced (automation) features. The first self-invented challenge was to get Windows shutdown after downloading has completed.

I was trying to use the 'Finish all tasks and shutdown Windows'. But, I do not seem to get it working.

I could not find info in the manual (UE-site and binaries4all.nl) on this subject.

the option initiates windows shutdown when all UE tasks are finished.

which windows are you using? xp or vista?

with winxp sometimes what i have here when i'm trying to shutdown windows with start->turn off computer - it doesn't work, then when i'm trying the second time it does work. with vista it may be the same i didn't check it.

if you shutdown windows with the start button does it always shut down immediately?

i will now check whether the UE option works on this computer...

It may not be UE. I've never used this function myself so I can't comment on how well it works. Try running some other software that does the same thing. A quick search brought up this list. Try running something that can shutdown at a scheduled time to test your computer's ability. Sometimes computers don't respond to commands like this depending on how the BIOS is set up. There may also be some other attached hardware that prevents this from happening.

i'm back again, here it works ok. there is a small delay, i think UE checks for all UE tasks finished maybe every several seconds.

UE just tells windows to shut down, windows sends notification to all running applications and any application may tell windows not to shut down. I think the windows start button->turn off computer works in the same way.

as to UE ensure there are no pending article tasks in the articles pane, it may be the case if you have a server suspended, since shutdown won't work if there are pending tasks.

i remember someone asked for finish all task and standby option it is here on the to do list.

Alex,

I'm using Windows XP.

If just tried it again myself...and it worked!

What I did differently this time was that I first shut down all the applications (exept UE) myself.

I'll guess there was another naggy Windows program/process that kept Windows from shutting down the first time I tried the UE-shutdown function.

Thanks for looking into this and your prompt support (as well as from the others who were so kind to give a respons).

Now I can continue happy UE-ing and explore the other functions as well.

Guys,

I found out what the real cause was of the issue.

It was the standard Windows XP screen saver. It has an option to go back to the 'Welcome' screen, i.e. you need to log in again.

Once I disabled this option, i.e. than it's not needed to login once the screensaver is becomes active, UE shuts down properly.
