My DB directory for UE is 8.07 GB! I've been using UE for several years, but I never noticed before because there was always plenty of room. I'm guessing that I'm not releasing or purging something. Every once in a while (perhaps once every 6 weeks), I do crash while UE is running. Might that have something to do with it?
I've got 4.55 GB in /Bodies and 3.51GB in /Newsgroups.
Can you make an educated guess which setting I might have wrong or what to clean up? Or is this not unusual?
Thanks.
Large UE/DB directory
as to bodies - invoke edit menu->bodies then if you don't need anything there - select all ctrl+a, then press right mouse button and invoke "delete bodies" or more drastic "purge all headers&threads" from the context menu. if you changed something in edit menu->properties->save/unpack, save, e.g. if you unchecked "delete incomplete bodies" or "delete bodies without attachments" the bodies will accumulate as time goes.
as to newsgroups check what retention is set in edit menu->properties->newsgroups, if it is natural set it to something more limited, from other side 3.5GB in newsgroups directory is not so much if you download headers in large newsgroups, every part has associated message-id, so every partial message which you see as one line in UE may be associated with many parts so it takes some space to keep it all. if you don't download headers usually the problem is setting natural retention, then in import group all headers accumulate over years.
at one point i had one database around 50GB, but it was intentional, when i didn't delete bodies after save.
as to crashes, if it is UE crashes forward me log.txt from the UE database directory so i could tell what it might be, e.g. certain pattern would point to a faulty RAM, or sometimes you see crashes in the firewall/antivirus driver, if those are system crashes you need to check the system.

Thanks, Alex for the quick and accurate reply.
edit->bodies->purge all headers&threads pretty much released all the space in the /Bodies directory.
How do I keep this from happening again? Do I just do this purge periodically? In Properties->Save/Unpack->Save, I have everything but "Delete Headers" checked. Should I check that one?
With regard to NewsGroups, yes I do download headers from some big newsgroups. With what I just recovered from /Bodies, I'm OK with that one at its current size.
It's an old machine. It crashes occasionally no matter what's running. And since I tend to leave UE running there quite often, UE is frequently the victim.

you don't have to check delete headers, they will just expire, just ensure the retention in properties->newsgroups is set to something else than "natural"
with bodies directory what kind of attachments you saw there, maybe you marked something for download but not for save? or something ended with error, you cleared the error. if it is something mild you can just check it periodically, sort by date and delete all you don't need until recent date.
