Get New Headers UE 2.5 (xzver - avast - disable nntp scan)

Post by marseye »

Hi Alex,

Just to say that UE 2.5 didn't allow me anymore to Get New Headers (I've got an account at Newshosting.com): the task manager did say 'connecting' for a long moment, then indicating the new headers range, but could never start to bring any in, despite several attempts.

Having contacted my Newshosting support, they couldn't find any problem with their servers.

Solved the problem by installing back UE 2.3.1 (couldn't find any 2.4 from the homepage). I'm a registered user.

I hadn't seen this problem, since I've been using the internal search only for a long while.

I apologize if the problem is already known...

Except for this problem, UE is the best newsreader I've ever seen : I couldn't do without it.

Thanks, and bravo for your good work.

Did you check that your firewall was not blocking the new version?

Just checked : no, it doesn't , and it never blocked any previous version (windows xp integrated firewall).
Thx anyway.

Did you get any errors in the error pane when trying to get headers?

Does the UE search service work? are you able to download files?

Do you have any other security type software that could block UE?

There has been some changes to UE when downloading headers using compression, try unchecking Menu->Edit->Properties->General->Compressed headers->Support Compressed headers

Ps: I have all version of UE after 2.30, I can make available to you.

That's ok : your last answer solved the problem (had to uncheck 'support compress headers'). I think that Newshosting.com doesn't compress headers (with my account type, it's an unlimited one, but not encrypted). Everything's fine now.

Thanks for your efficiency.

if it is not the server the question what it is then, if you tell it is not firewall.

i've sent you pm, maybe to try to test that through proxy.

Later:

i checked it through proxy, in short it is not newshosting related.

try to check it is not your firewall, do you have anything on your computer which may analyze nntp traffic? it must be something there.

Thanks for your extensive testing.
I don't plan to take the laptop out soon, then I don't know when I will get a chance to try with another ISP.

My laptop is a HP, but i din't install their TPM (Trust Platform mmmthing... hardware component... ), and it's deactivated from the bios settings.

The firewall is ok, and not filtering nntp, nor UE. I just made some testing with it off. It doesn't make a difference.

The only thing I see is : Avast Antivirus Free Edition. It watches nntp from its e-mail watchdog. But I can't change nothing critical from the settings panel about nntp...

But what's really strange is that Giganews works, especially if the data exchanged are the same ...

Well, thanks anyway. Hope you'll soon learn more about it. My personnal programming skills are about 0.05/20.

Cheers. Great support anyway.

ok i installed avast antivirus here and got the same result.

what you need to do - in antivirus settings, internet mail, press customize, nntp, uncheck BOTH inbound news and outbound news, then here it started working.

another way - leave those checked but use port 80 instead of port 119, it won't stuck on binary content then.

also better to have a provider with SSL enabled then nothing can scan your nntp traffic. btw newshosting doesn't support xzhdr, they only support xzver, not sure about UNS, don't have access to them right now.

Alex,

Firewall ? My Avast is just an antivirus. May be that's why I could fin no inbounds nor outbounds separate ports to set. Is there really an Avast Firewall ?...
But I could redirect the nntp watched ports to something else than 119. If you put 80 instead, then the internet browsing will get stuck (I tried). So, better find another port.

The problem now will be that any virus included in binaries won't be detected anymore. I'll have to check manually. Avast made it on the run...

Sounds a good idea to change for a SSL news server. Won't it attract suspicion upon me, since it's encoded ? That's what I'm affraid of.
Anyway, a large blocked account should be better for me, since I don't download that much.

Thanks for everything.

i've installed the same avast as you have (the current version which is on their website), i've meant avast antivirus free edition (corrected it in my post), it is not really only antivirus since it meddles with the incoming/outbound traffic.

so those options i mentioned are there, yes, if you want to play safe - just use port 80, but disabling nntp scan is also safe, since the raw data downloaded is stored in the UE database and cannot be executed on your computer, then, when you save downloaded files antivirus will go into play. again, e.g. if you were using SSL no program would be able to scan the traffic.

just consider those options, they are under internet mail settings, it is maybe why you couldn't find them.

Finally found the settings you're describing.
Thanks again (you deserve it), Alex, for this problem wasn't about your software.
But because Avast is very popular, some UE users may find this thread usefull. I wish I'll never have to bother you again. Congrats for your patience.
