What do "Catch Up" and "Compact & Free" do?

Post by malcarada »

I could not find this on the manual, and I could not work out myself what this does.

1- When I right click on a newsgroup name I see the word "Catch Up", what does it do?

2- On the Database I see Compact Binary > "Compact" and "Compact & Free", what is the difference between them?

Thank you

compact&free - "compact" means compacting newsgroup storage on the disk which only makes sense if you e.g. drastically reduce retention (number of newsgroups headers), if newsgroup volume remains about the same or growing the space is effectively reused. "free" you can ignore since it is done automatically, it is part of processing headers, it reduces RAM usage periodically.

catch up - in the past it was a standard newsreader option, as far as i remember (i didn't use it really, just implemented it a long time ago) it means clearing/ignoring headers currently on the server and starting with the headers which will appear on the server from now on. to use it you need to download some headers for a starting point - so UE will know the last article number on the server.
