I use C:\UsenetExplorer\Downloads as the root of my save folders. Seems like the folder select dialog used to remember that for Download&save attachments. Now it always wants to start with UserID\Documents.
I must have accidentally changed a setting. Can you tell me where to fix it? It used to remember the last folder and I'd just change the name of the folder at the end of the chain to make another subfolder.

default download folder?

Re: default download folder?
Go to Menu->Edit->Properties->Newsgroups tab, the line at the top called Default has the default setting all newsgroups use unless changed.
The save directory path and setting is at the bottom of the dialog, if all newsgroups should use the default save path, the save setting needs to be Default on all newsgroups except the default at the top.
Hopefully this legible and helpful.

Re: default download folder?
This is how it works.
When a certain save directory is set for newsgroup or folder - all clear, it will always save or start the browse for folder dialog with that folder.
When newsgroup/folder save directory "Default" it is when the tompost "Default" entry comes into play, but the behaviour depends whether the browse for folder dialog is displayed or not when you invoke download&save.
If the browse for folder dialog is shown (it will only happen when the "ask" is checked for the topmost "Default" entry) - the program will remember the last save directory and will start browse for folder dialog pointing to it, so it won't necessarily will use the save directory of the "Default" entry.
If the dialog is not shown so the program should assign the download folder automatically without asking user about it ( "ask" is unchecked or you invoked download&save (auto) ) - using the folder from the previous save destination wouldn't make sense since you won't see it - the program will just use the "Default" entry save directory then.
In your case apparently "ask" is checked and I presume the save directory of individual entries are set to "Default", then when you invoke download&save - change the save folder into the old location once (and press OK) and from now on it should point out to it again when the browse for folder dialog pops up.

Re: default download folder?
Thanks for the replies. I see what was happening now. I was making a subfolder to the Downloads folder. But after removing the contents, I deleted the subfolder. When the dialog popped up, it didn't find the last folder because I deleted it. It reverts to Documents. Now I'll try just using Downloads as default with "ask" unchecked.

Re: default download folder?
Yes, when reusing the last folder - it doesn't recreate it (since maybe it is irrelevant already) or checks for its existence, but just passes the path to the browse for folder dialog and when it doesn't find the directory it apparently points to the Documents folder then.
Maybe I'll elaborate it in the next version, so it will go up until the folder exists or if the whole drive is not there - to point to the save directory of the "Default" entry as the last resort.

Re: default download folder?
Thanks alex. It seemed erratic because sometimes it did and sometimes it didn't, but that was just because if I did more than one download in a session I hadn't deleted the target. Now that I'm no longer confused I think it's easier just to let it auto name the subfolder. But the method you describe of going up the folder chain checking for an existing folder may eliminate confusion and feel intuitive when doing things manually.
The automatic method works great though. One less thing to click.

Re: default download folder?
From reading the above, then the ask tickbox is only used for the topmost "default" setting.
If it has no meaning for a named newsgroup or folder, then can I suggest that for each individual newsgroup/folder line the tickbox is greyed out please. (It confused me being allowed to tick or untick it and not see any difference.)
Thanks.

Re: default download folder?
The ask tick-box can be changed for any newsgroup/folder that uses a custom save directory.Hamish wrote:From reading the above, then the ask tickbox is only used for the topmost "default" setting.
It should be grayed out(disabled), if the newsgroup/folder uses the default save directory. Re: default download folder?
Jon - you misunderstand.
For a non-default newsgroup/folder, yes the tick box is available and not greyed out. However it does nothing - you have a default location. A dialog box will come up starting at that location whether ask is ticked or not.
In other words you get "ask" behaviour for non default whether it is ticked or not. So remove the ability to tick it.

It's Joni or jonib.Hamish wrote:Jon - you misunderstand.
Well I can only tell you that it seems to work for me. I have a folder with a non default save dir, and ask is unticked, I don't get a save dialog even if the default ask box is ticked. In other words you get "ask" behaviour for non default whether it is ticked or not.
So I'm probably still misunderstanding.

Re: default download folder?
Sorry - Jon is a UK name so I assumed too much.
This area is confusing. Here is my guess at how it works.
1) You are not using "Default" in the "Save:" box - i.e. you have an explicit location
a)If ask is ticked then you get a dialog box starting at that location in the "Save:".
b)If ask is not ticked, saves go to that location in the "Save:".
2) You are using Default there - i.e. you mean to use the location specified for the Default entry.
a)If ask is ticked in the Default entry you get a dialog box starting at the last chosen save location.
b)If ask is not ticked in the Default entry, saves go to the location in the Default "Save:".
Option (2a) is inconsistent design. To be consistent, option (2a) should be
If ask is ticked in the Default entry you get a dialog box starting at that location in the Default "Save:".
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is why I think that.
There are three operational choice types:
1 - Use default or explicit location information
2 - Location - A place on the computer
3 - Ask - always use the specified location either automatically (no ask) or as a starting point in a dialog (ask)
Alex has chosen to use some non-standard rule which has confused.
I think there needs to be a fourth piece of operational choice for when ask is true:
4 - Use specified location or last starting point browsed to (if no last starting point,i.e. first time this session, use specified location).
This needs another tick box.
