Download and Save Attachments

Post by Frashii »

Hi Alex,

Thanks for making Newspro.. its one of the best software purchases I've made in a long time.

Sometimes, when I choose to 'Download and Save Attachments', it downloads the files (Make the little paper icon next to the thread), but it doesn't actually save the files until I go back in a 2nd time and choose "Save Attachments" or "Download and Save Attachments'.

Also, is it possible to get a 'size' for each message rather than the number of lines, or is this information not available by just downloading the headers.

Thanks for all your hard work.

UUE encoding and final file size

Post by Pegleg »

Hi Frashii
This is the answer to your second question -

Getting the final number of bytes out of a usenet binary file is not realy available in the message header.

Originaly usenet was only envisaged for text messages so you see on the header, number of lines, made up of upto 62 characters.
uue encoding turns 4 characters in to 3 binary bytes but there are also
header lines and filler rubbish.

for more details look here

And about your first question: I had it too and it really gets annoying after some time, but going back to version 3.80 solved the problem.

I usually have no problems with autosave (v 3.81), but today I experienced something strange:

I was downloading a large number of messages from two different authors mixed among each others, however autosave would only save the attachments from one ot the two authors. Those from the other one I had to save manually afterwards.

Any idea what can cause this?

Oh yea, now I remember I actually also had a few other sets which would not autosave at all. But that was only today - usually have no problems with it.

BTW, if you run out of diskspace on the disk you save to, autosave will be disabled. Then you'll have to select "Tasks/Autosave" from the menu and uncheck "Block autosave but queue for it".

Well, I've found out now why those sets wouldn't autosave: All the sets had identical filenames (img001-025), so only the first set got saved, then NP skipped the rest.

However, it's only supposed to do that when you have selected "Skip always", which I hadn't - I had selected "Rename". So I didn't really think about that could be the reason.

"Rename" works okay when you manually save already downloaded attachments, but it does not seem to work when you use Autosave, there NP acts as if you have selected "Skip always".

Anyone else noticed that? Looks like a bug to me - I had no problems with older versions in this respect.

with newspro since autosave is also connected to the automatic mode it uses skip, so there is a difference between 'download&save' and just 'save' ('rename' will work only in the latter case), it is how it was programmed to work, at least for now.

OK - I thought I remembered it worked once, but I must remember wrong then.

But it would be nice if that option could be included as well.

Talking about autosave anyway, I would like to have some possibility to save partial messages automatically, although I am aware of the pitfalls of such an option.

Hey there Alex,

Just wanted to comment on this as well as it's been driving my nuts the past coupla days (don't often need the download & save function).

When I hit <Ctrl+K> NewsPro only downloads the active item, not all selected items, when I hit <Alt+K> NewsPro downloads all selected items but doesn't save them.

For most commands I know the Alt and Ctrl keys are interchangable, but not this one...

Thanks for a great product! :D

ctrl+k and alt+k use the same code, just the former is for the focused and the latter for selected items. if you invoke alt+k on one header it will be exactly the same as ctrl+k.

usually there is a problem, like duplicate name or write error which unfortunately is not shown, i couldn't find any problems with the code otherwise, in the future probably it will be more transparent.

if you invoke 'save attachments' afterwards with the same directory and overwrite mode set to 'skip' does it succeed?

Thanks for clarifying the Ctrl / Alt point - that helps make sense of things.

In NewsPro properties, on the "Newsgroups" tab, I only have entries for the default group. A folder is specfied for saving, and "Ask" is not checked.

On the "General" tab, in the "Save attachments" block, "ask for delete" is not checked. In the "Savings mode (initial)" block, general is set to "auto" and overwrite to "rename".

To my understanding, this means that <Alt+D> on a group of posts, followed by <Alt+A> should save the attachments without prompting, renaming the attachments if there are duplicates. And that <Alt+K> should do the same as <Alt+D> then <Alt+A>.

Unless I've missed something (possible) NewsPro should be able to handle the attachments without hassles, so I don't think there's a problem saving that's holding this step back.

Anyone have an anything else to add / suggest I check?
