How to export newsgroups & servers

Post by krdu »

I have seen may complaints that newsgroups and servers can't be exported and reloaded. That is not actually true.

To export ALL SETTINGS is relatively easy.

1. Copy the settings directory and the Newsgroups directory.

2. Erase everything in the Settings directory except for reg.dat.

3. From EACH of the directories in the Newsgroups directory, erase the first and last file - cnt.dat and ng.sdb

This last is most easily done in 4DOS from a command window using the /s switch - del ng.sdb/s. I haven't used the Microsoft command processor in 15 years but I seem to remember that the /s switch isin't available there.

4. Open this database. Voila! Everything back, all preferences, newsgroups, servers, in an empty database.

Now for some help - I seem to have lost my task manager window and I can't get it back from any of the menu options. Anyone know how to do this?

By the way - I forgot to mention - if you simply download headers it will start from the last date you downloaded, skipping the earlier headers. If you re-scan headers, however, it will get all headers allowed by your preference settings.
