Just installed v113, entered the News Server data, port 119 and the login info.
I cannot get it to download the list of NGs from the server, have been struggling for one hour at least, it just does not go online.
Kindly advise.
Thanks

Cannot get UE v113 to download list of NGs
Click the third icon from the left in the workspace (leftmost pane) to show the Newsgroup list. Right-click on the root (where it says 'Newsgroup list') and choose 'Get newsgroup list'. To view the downloaded group list, double-click 'Newsgroup list'.
If you still cannot download groups, check your firewall if you have one.

When I try what you have suggested, this is what happens.
It says "cannot find server or DNS error (UE20002)"
I have Win XP pro XP2 firewall, I did NOT get any alert from the firewall, apparently UE is not even attempting to go online.
I am trying to log onto a comcast account at : newsgroups.comcast.net
I have copied and pasted this from Forte Agent Server setup, where it is working fine.
I have chosen not make UE a default Newsreader, would that make any diffeence? I have Agent as my default Newsreader.
Thanks

UE cannot find the server. This suggests you're telling it to look for something that isn't there. Try rechecking your spelling for the server name. If the login info wasn't right, UE would tell you that also, so for now you need to make sure that the server name is correct.Netman wrote:It says "cannot find server or DNS error (UE20002)"
WinXP's firewall is next to useless as many others would tell you. It doesn't alert you to programs attempting outbound traffic. You'd be better off disabling it and using one of the many free ones available. Personally I use ZoneAlarm (Pro, not the antivirus/spyware version I don't need or want) but others might suggest another.Netman wrote:I have Win XP pro XP2 firewall, I did NOT get any alert from the firewall, apparently UE is not even attempting to go online.
The DNS errors you mention above seem to suggest that either the server name is incorrect or you have a firewall blocking UE from contacting the server. Even though you've copy/pasted, recheck the spelling anyway - you may have accidentally missed a letter from one end as you selected before copying.Netman wrote:I am trying to log onto a comcast account at : newsgroups.comcast.net

After further thought, I'm thinking you might have done something simple. When you created your new server, did you put in something like 'Comcast' in the 'Name:' box? The 'Name:' box needs to have the server address and the Nick can be anything. e.g.:
- Name: newsgroups.comcast.net
Nick: Comcast
No. It's similar to having several web browsers installed - they should all work but only one can be default.Netman wrote:I have chosen not make UE a default Newsreader, would that make any diffeence?
Thanks for the detailed response.
You are right on the money, I did not enter the server info correctly, I entered a nick where I needed to enter the server address. In fact I entered two nicks and server address I entered on Properties>general screen, where I thought it belonged.
Anyway, all is well now. I feel the interface is not very intuitive, but the application is very fast.
Thanks again for your help.
