Mark Read on Close (tab)

Post by Leechmonkey »

Is there a checkbox anywhere that can "Mark Read on Close" much like xnews?

Reason I like this is that I can leave a tab open and let it update. But once I see what I need to see, I'll click x and exit the particular group and would like UE to mark them all as read.

I see "Mark Read on Open" which doesn't make sense to me or maybe I'm just not using it properly.

i guess you meant 'mark old'

new/old behaves similar to read/unread, also there is 'flagged/unflagged' simular to outlook express.

there is a button 'mark all headers old', also it can be assigned a shortcut (i think it has one too), but no checkbox right now, but in principle it could be easy to add (sounds ok), it will work exactly as the button (and if e.g. a newsgroup is opened in several windows all headers in the window which is being closed will be marked old in other windows as well since e.g. one window may be combined view containing several newsgroups and other the single newsgroup).

the option you referred (mark read on open) to is marking header read on opening the article body, read is relevant to article bodies.

I really wanted Mark Old on Close, but the reason I sad Mark Read on Close is because there is no Font and Color customization on Old articles. There are new, read, etc... I'm just used to not filtering anything but scrolling through stuff and see which one is old and new based on Color or background.

am i making sense?

customization is in edit menu -> fonts&colors.

the topmost 'headers' is like normal color which means 'old' and 'unread' as well.

new is new and read is read. if you mark header read, read takes over the 'new' color.

there is no reason to differentiate between 'old' and 'unread', there are already enough colors :)

maybe i'll drop the 'mark headers old on load' in properties->general since during header download newsgroup is always loaded but it doesn't mean the newsgroup is also open, and replace it with marking old on closing the tab looks like a better solution at first look.

The colors are good enough for me now that I've figured out New is new and Headers can be a different color to mark old :) Thanks a bunch.

Looking forward to the mark as old on exit.

Also, what do you think about implementing an on the fly sorting/downloading in the download queue. That way, if I have a bunch of movies/games/mp3 to download, I'll select the date/age column and it sorts by date/age and UE will always download from the top down. In this case, oldest to the newest.

I'd use that quite a bit to get files before they expire on my usenet provider.

the queue can be sorted by date or by priority (look for the sort article queue option in the tasks menu).

even when it is sorted by date there may be articles with a higher priority (or priorities) which reside above the date queue range (download immediately) and tasks marked for later download below the date queue range (download later, see tasks menu, suspend tasks marked for later download).

in edit menu->properties tasks you can set which priorities will be immediate/later.

so e.g. if immediate is highest and high priority, later - lowest and you sort article queue by date, if you want to download something right away you invoke "download immediately", the task will get the high priority and will go above the ordered by date segment of the queue etc. i think it is clear enough.

if the article queue is sorted by priority the higher priority tasks are downloaded first (suspend download later i.e. marking for later download works here as well).

also you can drag articles in the article queue to change order, just select with the mouse and drag them, or use 'move to top' so they will be downloaded right away.

in short the general idea you can have article queue ordered by date or priority; when it is ordered by date, you still can download something right away. however the queue is ordered you can mark some articles for later download.
