I am using news pro but this is not working for me anymore as it constantly crashes.
so I am trying newsnet explorer, the filter i used to use is greyed out

newspro is quite reliable unless you try to download more headers than it can handle thus running out of virtual memory (about 4.5M per instance. but maybe some slowdown on header tasks for large groups as well).
in usenet explorer there are quick filter and usual filters (edit menu->filter editor). also check properties->newsgroups, you can (after creating it in filter editor) e.g. to assign a ban filter for all newsgroups as inial filter.
