XOVER error on teranews

Post by longneck »

i keep getting an error in the task manager from teranews that says "420 XOVER xxxxxxxxxxxx-yyyyyyyyyyyyyyy alt.bin.somenewsgroup" when i download headers. i tried reseting that particular group, but i still get the error.

now sure what to try next. any suggestions? this seems to have started happening since i upgraded from 1.1.4 to 1.1.6, but it could just be a coincidence.

the error means wrong header range.

if you reset header range (when you reset newsgroup header range is reset as well) it uses the same range as reported by the server in the preceeding "group" command, so it might be some problem with the server.

so try to contact their support (or maybe it is short-term server problem).

I saw a message in alt.free.newsservers (I think) :) that said both teranews and bubanews had changed there software. They no longer allow you to get headers within a range, but will only return ALL headers. I am stating this from memory, but it is messing up several newsreaders.

it doesn't make sense to get all headers every time, since if newsgroup has 4M headers and 1000 headers arrive it means you download 4M headers again. in short it is needed to be checked with their support.

No it does not make any sense at all. There is no support for the free news servers.

This is from the teranews system status page.

We recently switched news server software. All article numbers have changed. This has caused to large amount of frustration for some users and they do not understand why their client no longer works. Please remove the news server profile and recreate it. That should fix the article number problem. We are also trying to document any settings that need changed on a per client basis below. If your client does not work look for a "maximum number of header" option and change it to unlimted or a very large number like 100000000 (100 million). That sovles 99% of the problems.

Clients that guess at the number of articles in a group by using data from the group list will estimate a very large number of articles. When the client actually enters the group the correct number will be given by the server. There is no solution for this and it effect are strictly cosmetic. Just ignore it as it doesn't harm anything.

Some clients will attempt to download headers in small chunks. This will greatly slow down the download speed of headers by a factor of 10-1000x time slower. All tested clients, except newsbinpro have the ability to turn this off. Please unselect the "download x number of headers at a time" feature for best performance.

no resetting header ranges or resetting the newsgroup would resolve problem, you can see it also in the header range properties (i remember in server context menu->advanced)
