Download Priorities

Post by batfink »

Ok, i'm probably asking a question thats been asked before so i apologize in advance, but i'm a newb to this program.
Since its advertised in competition to newsleecher (and indeed in most cases it is better), i'll use NL as an example.
In NL you can tell it how many connections to the server it makes, so you right click on a file (or a bunch of highlited files) and choose "Leech", this will add the file(s) to the download Queue and start downloading them opening as many connections to the server as you specified. Now whilst they are downloading lets just say you spot a picture in the group you want to get, You can right click on it and choose "Open/Read" and it will get jumped to the front of the Queue and download straight away, when its finished NL will continue with the rest of the Queue.

Is there any way to get UE to do this apart from Right Clicking on the Files(s) and choosing Advanced/Download with Priority/Highest which is fairly cumberson or just clicking on the file normally and then changing its priority in the Task manager.

I tried changing the settings in the Task settings to "ARTICLE TASKS -ADVANCED DOWNLOAD LATER - LOW AND BELOW" and "DOWNLOAD IMMEDIATELY PRIORITIES - NORMAL AND ABOVE" but this didnt do anything.

Hopefully domebody can point me in the right direction, I'm guessing there is a way to do it...just havnt looked in the right place yet

You can either:

1) Properties->Tasks->Download immediately and assign extra task slots to any articles you download at the priority selected in the dropdown list. Then using the context menu, choose Advanced->Download immediately or Download & save immediately. You can assign any keyboard shortcut to Download immediately/& save (right-click the toolbar, Customise->keyboard tab, Newsgroup view in the dropdown list).

2) Assign extra task slot(s) as above, download as normal then find it in the queue in the Articles tab of Task Manager and either click-drag it to the top or right-click and choose 'Move to top'.

Both methods will open up a new, separate thread for the articles due to the extra task slots being assigned. Any articles queued to download immediately will have a red exclamation mark icon in Task Manager.

My setup is for the first method. I selected Download immediately priority to High and above and I only really use one extra task slot. Then I assigned the keys CTRL+I to download immediately. This puts the article at the top of the queue but doesn't save it. In your case the download priority setting isn't strictly necessary but I have it set like that so I can suspend articles yet still download anything immediately without it being paused (Properties->Tasks->Article tasks - advanced->Download later priorities). The advantage of this is that I can queue up many articles but not have them consume all bandwidth, letting me quickly get NFOs and such. As with most things in UE, you can customise and tweak far too many settings for me to go in to too much depth here to suit your needs.

The short answer for you:

Assign keyboard shortcuts to Download immediately or Download & save.

Yup, ok i understand..ok, currently what i've done is when i'm queuing a large lot of files i've queued them for download and save immediately with low priority, then i've set Default article tasks to Above normal, so now when i just click on an article it gets jumped to the head of the Queue.
I had a look at trying to make a Hotkey for Download and Save Immediately with low Priority..but geez, talk about confusing.

One last question, I'm currently have a bunch of items queued with low priority and i want to update a different group, but when i try to update it, the Header update is pending and wont update till the Queue is either finished or paused..how do i push the importance of group updating to the head of the Queue, the same goes for posting a reply in a group...Both of these i consider being things you want to do straight away, not when the Queue is empty

TIA

Personally I don't use priorities much since I mostly prefer downloading by date (getting things before they expire from the server is the highest priority for me because it saves money by downloading from my ISP before my pay servers). You can just Download & save without having to use priorities and use Download immediately for grabbing just the articles you want right away. Download priorities only really take effect when you sort your download queue by priority anyway, as opposed to sorting by date (Tasks->Sort article queue). If you're sorted by date then you needn't use priorities.

I agree UE can be difficult to understand at first but then you will appreciate the mass of options once you get to grips with it later on and see the power it has. Possibly I shouldn't have given you such a lengthy and convoluted first reply...

Step-by-step it would be:

Right-click toolbar->Customise->Keyboard tab
in the Category dropdown list choose 'Newsgroup view'
select 'Download immediately' in the Commands list
to the right, click in the box below where it says 'Press new shortcut key' and hold down the keys you'd like to assign to the command then click 'Assign'
as long as the shortcut doesn't conflict with any other built-in default shortcuts you will be able to use it straight away without having to restart UE.

This has to do with Properties->Tasks->Relative chance to run. Tasks are given priorities internally by UE based on their type. You can change these by adjusting the sliders according to your preference, though I'd recommend you leave them at their defaults as they are pretty much fine - there are many ways to tweak things in UE. Additionally, click-drag or right-click->move to top tasks you want to run first. Bear in mind that most tasks will wait until a thread is free before starting to download and also if you have more than one server, UE will wait until a thread is free for that particular pending server. Posting articles has the highest priority as default while headers has almost the lowest. If you'd like to just get headers and pause article downloads you can select Tasks->Suspend article tasks marked for later download and then deselect this once the headers are downloaded.
