NZB won't import thru IE
File won't Import from IE but works from Firefox, when opening them from the Newzbin site. when clicking on the nzb to open in usenet Explorer the program open up like its import the file but no file show up in Import, but it works if I use Firefox, note this was working before then stop, I try using system restore but that failed, I like not to have to reload the OS to get this problem fix.
in edit menu->properties->general->search service, associate with import file extensions is checked?
if you associate nzb extension in the windows explorer (open with->choose program) file associations e.g. with notepad (just check "associate..." afterwards in UE again when you are done) can it open it? if not it will give path, can you go in windows explorer there and see the file?
i remember vaguely something related, like the IE temp file cannot be opened from certain locations by any program, if so just to look for more info how to resolve it given the error message.

You're not running the IE 7 beta i hope? If you do, that could be the problem.

1. you didn't answer in usenet explorer in edit menu->properties->search service, associate with import file extension is checked?
2. as to verifying the problem with notepad:
what i mean save a nzb to desktop.
then click right mouse button and invoke "open with", invoke "choose program" select "notepad.exe" and check "always use the selected program" and press "ok"
then try to open a nzb from newzbin, does notepad shows nzb or not? if not what error dialog it shows in the beginning (cannot open...).
3. after you are done with notepad check again "associate with import file extensions" in usenet explorer.

Spooky I was just going to post I have this exact problem too.
Happens with NewsPro too, so not just UE.
I think it must be an IE issue, as has already been said if you save the nzb to the desktop then double click - it imports fine.
In answer to your questions alex:
1) Yes
2) Get the following error: "Cannot find the file xxxxxxx.nzb do you want to create a new file"
What seems to happen is that when you click open on the newzbin site, the NZB is downloaded, UE opens - then nothing. I suspect that the filename of the NZB is not being passed in the commandline to UE, which is probably an IE bug.
Its a pain, but I can live with saving to the desktop then double clicking.
EDIT:
I've checked my IE cache to see if the filename it is looking for actually exists, and it doesn't. So it must be a fault with IE not caching the nzb file properly from Newzbin.
Also having searched the web, it appears other people are complaining about this too with other software.

the nzb file name is short? what is the exact name of the file?
there should be some solution (look for similar problems elsewhere, maybe there was a mention of it here in the past as well), maybe to try to clear the IE file cache?
i remember it is a problem when files cannot be opened by any program with "open" from IE.
if you open zip file e.g. from UE website is it opened ok?
or maybe an antivirus thinks the file is infected and deletes it right away?

Other files open fine using the 'open' from IE.
Here are the exact filenames I of an example I just tried from Newzbin:
m:\temp\IE cache\Temporary Internet Files\content.IE5\K7WLST4P\msgid_1979384_Ronyasoft_Proposter_v1[1].01.26.nzb
I checked my IE cache and this file does not exist. The path up until the filename does exist, however the file does not.
I wonder if its possible that Newzbin has some way of causing the files not to be cached??
EDIT:
Just tried the same thing using Binsearch and it works fine using the open button. The file opens in notepad.. so it is Newzbin specific!!

since noone had this and suddenly two people came up with the same problem.
did you try in IE tools->options->general to invoke "delete files"?
Have tried that Alex thanks. Am discussing this with the Newzbin peeps on IRC now, but no-one seems to believe me!
They just poke fun at IE
For your information, I just tried opening that same NZB directly through IE and it worked fine. I use Opera as my main browser and IE only for sites that refuse to work in Opera. It's possible that your IE may have become corrupt over time (the reason why I switched to Opera in the first place).
Many times I have found that downloading text files (NZBs are plaintext XML) and IE will treat them as binary and therefore they will refuse to be recognised by UE. An example is discussed here.

There's a simple way to test it. Close UE, open an NZB from IE and if UE starts up but the NZB hasn't imported correctly then it means IE has corrupted MIME settings. If UE doesn't start up then that narrows down the avenue of exploration.
Either way I proved that NewzBin haven't changed anything as it worked no problem for me.

Check for the filename '?ps_id=1979384'. Watch the status bar in IE when downloading from NewzBin and you'll notice that you don't see the entire filename - just the post ID. Also, open your Temporary Internet Files directory in Explorer, change to details view and sort by Last Modified. Then download an NZB and press F5 to refresh. Scroll to the end and you'll see your newly downloaded NZB there.dvd.collector wrote:I checked my IE cache and this file does not exist.
