XPAT search on usenetserver doesn't work, right?

Post by AndreW »

After using NewsPro for almost 2 years, lately I became more and more interested in xpat searching (caused by me frequenting some very large binary groups that take forever to download headers from).
My confidence became so great that I deleted all newsgroups and only kept some xpat groups. Everything still great (startup became much faster), except for my usenetserver account. It constantly gave me "Error 423 No such article in group" messages for all articles it told me it had.
I (of course) contacted usenetserver. Their answer (after learning I use NewsPro 3.65) was: "Try creating a new server account. The messages cache could have corrupted on the old one." After doing this I had no improvement, which I told them, but they stopped responding.

From reading this forum and NewsPro's 'What's new' I understand usenetserver is made aware of this problem but does not reply. I understand programming 'around' this behaviour is difficult (and of course 'wrong').
The temporary solution I now use is adding the groups I want to xpat search in and automatically download headers just from usenetserver. Now my xpat searches work like expected again.

I'd like to know if there is any more I can do. Also I'd like to know if there are some hidden buttons that I could still try.

Thanks,
Andre

usenetserver is maybe the only service that has chronic problems with maintaining message-id index they don't want to address (when it happened with other services like once on easynews they considered the problem as it is - corrupted server database or a serious malfunction, and fixed as soon as they were aware about it).

newspro can handle the problem regarding usual newsgroups, but xpat is somewhat more difficult since that would require indexing not only subscribed newsgroups but all newsgroups one uses in xpat dialog with almost only purpose to defeat their unwilliness to address the problem, 'almost' because indexing newsgroups used in xpat would allow to see the newsgroups the articles in xpat groups can be found, so maybe in the end i'll think about it but it is not so trivial (I'm planning to keep newsgroup id in 1 word , or about 64K newsgroups max - space considerations, then also maintaining associated article counters is needed so unused newsgroups will be deleted, 64K is not too much).
