Completing incomplete files; retention

Post by Hubert »

I have two related questions.

1.
It happens now and again that not all the parts of a multipart file are complete for a day or so. I do not succeed in getting the headers of the missing parts the next day when they are indeed present: I tried all kinds of things but to no avail.
How should I proceed?
I use compact binary newsgroups.

2.
If I delete all headers and bodies of a group and then try to get the headers again, first setting the retention to 7 days, UE gets the headers 80 days old. I don't understand this. How do I get the headers not older than 7 days?

1. probably you need to take care of incomplete bodies yourself by unchecking properties->articles->delete incomplete bodies

2. i added option in properties->general->let all incoming headers through (in the first time) so users won't be distracted and some servers like giganews were known not to be able to scan headers properly so the operation failed.

if you uncheck the option the relevant headers usually will be found faster than when checked (but again it depends on the server, just much less data to get through connection then).

also better you set "header range" (last headers) since servers don't understand retention but they understand header range, so if you put approximate number of headers to download usually on per group basis since newsgroups so differ in number of headers there will be much less headers to look at.

Thanks Alex, I will try that. I have always been confused about these things. I thought it had to do perhaps with using compact binaries, but I will follow your suggestions. BTW I don't use Giganews anymore, just Usenet-News.
