Firmware problem - between the chair and the keyboard...

Post by pgr07 »

G'day Alex and All...

about a week ago I was down to my last 400Mb on the drive !!

UE was installed on a 3Gig partioned drive which includes 8 multimedia players, (wish I could say it was on a dedicated drive..) but when I look at the drive through "file > properties" I can only account for about 200 Meg of files and data. Seriously... And defragmenting the disk does not help either.... :(

The system is operating fine otherwise - there doesn't seem to be any indication of viruses etc.

And so, because I'm not ready to replace the firmware - not just yet anyway - my questions to the wider User Group (after looking through the topics already listed) are:

1. Is there any possiblity that UE is using all this space with old header/message info, or whatever, in hidden or otherwise inaccessible files - not maliciously of course, but purely because my settings have not been optimum and I've never used free / compact database etc etc..?

2. If so, what is the best way to remove the unwanted data (maybe 2.7Gig approx)?

3. What settings should I invoke on UE to keep the database size down in future?
(I'm a very simple person, step 1, step 2, would be very much appreciated...)

Most grateful for any assistance that anyone is prepared to offer..
Kind regards,
Peter.

we'll be short :)

if you see only 200MB of files on UE database drive and there is only little space left - it is the system, check the file system for errors in windows explorer, or move all those 200MB somewhere, format the partition and move them back.

if you see ue database directory taking unusually large space you can use edit menu->bodies then delete unwanted bodies

also in properties->newsgroups check some retention is set so headers are not accumulated indefinitely although this reason even less likely (there was one user who set retention to unlimited so some newsgroups reached 150M headers, but then you see some delay when loading them and see those header numbers in the workspace).
