I was astonished to see that all of my subscribed groups had a red dot on it today when trying to download new headers. How come? Is there a log somewhere that would list the news servers response (Astraweb) or something?

get headers failed
just check in the task manager the headers error pane (you'll see the red question sign on the tab) what is the error, if "authentification failed" means your userid/pass are not valid, if "connection refused", dns error or timeout it might be firewall blocking the program access to the news server etc., there is always an associated error message which you can read and take appropriate action.
