I think Microsoft makes it also difficult to create good third party firewall solution by not releasing complete documentation/source code, I'm not sure it was fully resolved with those lawsuits several years ago. Now Microsoft with their own commercial "live one care" firewall/antivirus is the only competitor with the absolute power even to customize the system when their firewall needs it.

Ok, I've tried the tried the beta-drivers from the alternative kaspersky update source now and so far it seems to have solved the problem.

I always thought Kaspersky is one of the best virus scanners out there (I also had norton some time ago, it's been a terrible system hog - and I've read some bad things about nod32 lately) so I immediately jumped to wrong conclusions...
