I've been busy for a couple of days so now I can think about this in a slightly different way.

Do you have UE set to extract RARs? I've skimmed through the thread again but you only mention that the RAR does not download - nothing I can see about unpack.

Do you use the same server every time to grab headers and download from? My thinking here is that whichever server you pull headers from has a problem in which case any msg-id issue should show up in the console. Searching and downloading with UE (with feeds from, I think, three different servers) should supply the correct msg-id's.

We've established that the problem is not how the file looks inside or outside of the collection but whether or not it downloads, yes? If you attempt to download this particular post after pulling headers from your server it does not work. If you search with UE the download works as expected. Are these two statements true? This is a little bit of guesswork since it isn't until later in the thread that you mentioned searching and downloading this post. Also you mention in the first post that this is happening more and more - a possible indicator that something ongoing is wrong with your server supplying headers.

Disclaimer: Until you state which of the above guesswork is true or false, I deny all responsibility of the universe imploding, etc., etc.

Yes RAR is set to extract, and does when I get it :)

I have two servers, but I don't think it is a server problem. Simply a "collection" problem :)

Your assumptions are all correct. Except for the one on server supplying headers.

Steven Hawkins is responsible for the universe. You may continue :)

The only thing left to do, really, is to back up your Settings directory and create a new default install or run UE on a fresh computer with defaults. All that's different from your side is your settings. I had a moment recently where some settings were changed during an upgrade. Restoring them from a backup fixed the problem. Maybe you have an ever so slightly corrupt reg.dat or something.

Try the fresh copy defaults if you can and let's put this one to bed. At least the universe still works... :)

hholland:

what you are missing the collection entry is not the same as the rar file entry and in this particular case the rar file doesn't appear under the collection entry. when you expand the collection entry you see the collection files and the rar file is not there, even as the collection (yellow icon collection thread root entry) subject name is the same as the rar file name (par2 extension stripped).

i posted two samples. uncheck threads menu->show custom collections after opening the import group to see auto collections.

if you search for "testing12345" (including double quotes) and import - all files fall into the same auto collection (yellow icon), it is a well formed subject.

if you search for "testing12345678" (again with double quotes in the search pattern), similarly to your example the subject doesn't have double quotes or file numbers, so it is a border case, even more exaggerated.

i've just made here a small change which causes "testing12345678" entries to be joined under the same collection, later i'll publish it in the next version preview usergroup area.

frankly this case is insignificant, i have a representative sample - a folder comprising a number of newsgroups, i opened it with the newer and older code, the number of auto collections remained the same, only in the import group where i keep the post you mentioned and my artificial sample there is a difference. it is not always possible to improve auto collection recognition for malformed subjects, but if it is possible i don't mind to do it if i'm given a sample.
