UE 1.1 - User interface responding slow while downloading

Post by ruthensteiner »

Hi!

I'm having some problems with UE 1.1 - don't know if theses existed in earlier versions, this is the first one i'm using:

1) Most operations work much more fluent in UE than in NewsPro, especially opening groups and filtering - well done! Unfortunately this changes drastically as soon as any donwload tasks are running. The user interface is responding very slow while downloading. The newsgroup window is flickering all the time, the program is repeatedly stalled for about a second. Maybe this has something to do with having the database on a network drive. I do not have that problem with NewsPro.

2) Some headers do not get deleted after save operations. E.g. when saving 100 attachments about 20 headers are not deleted. "Don't delete incomplete bodies" is NOT checked in properties.

Any suggestions?

Brute force :_) Faster processor and faster drives. It is (I believe) the saving of things to disk that is eating up our processor cycles !!

Actually, UE should be responding faster than NP did in general, but I don't know about using a network drive for the database. Have you tried keeping your database on a local HD? Are you using a thin client?

As for the headers that are not being deleted, I would guess that perhaps those headers have incomplete attachments? Look at the square to the left of the subject - it should be either completely green (indicating the entire attachment is there), half-green/half-gray (indicating only part of the attachment is there), or half-red/half-green (indicating that only part of the attachment, NOT including the first part, is there). My guess would be that the ones not deleted are the ones that are incomplete and do not have squares that are completely green. Is this correct?

Well I had this same problem a while ago. And it had nothing to do with networked database. I set retention lower and applied it and the problem seemed to go away.

Strange problem, but it never came back.

Thank you all for your answers.

It seems that problem one has to do with keeping a 20Gb Database (lots of unsaved bodies) on a network drive. I moved the complete folder to a local drive and everything is much better now. Still a little flickering, but now it's possible to work (scroll around and mark messages,...) while downloading in the background.
Nevertheless I am very dissapointed if i cannot keep my database on a network drive, the way i can with NewsPro. I have to be able to access the database from various clients. Is there a chance for any fixes/improvements?

@hholland: I just want the same performance as with NewsPro.

@Gary Gnews: I do not use a thin client. (e.g. Athlon 2800+, 1GB RAM, Gbit Ethernet - the fileserver i used is slower though). And no - the attachments are complete (completely green).

I'm still experiencing problem number two. I'm pretty sure that this is a bug, just wondering why nobody else has the same problem???
