Dates as #s of days (age)

Post by ALiSMoNiToS »

Hi Alex and all,

First of all, I am a registered NP user and I just found out about UE and I am testing it (I knew *nothing* about it all this time, I didn't even know it existed--Alex, you need to do a better job marketing this thingy!). From what I have gathered from the discussions, it overcomes some of the limitations and the annoyances of NP, which is a fantastic thing.

I have a couple of questions. First, in NP if my database would get very large, NP would fire up a message saying so, and then effectively my database was trashed. NP wouldn't even load after that. I had to reset the database. It was very disheartening. Has this problem been fixed now? Can databases be much larger now in UE (especially with the compact binary option?)

Another thing: is it possible to see the age of the articles in #s of days (instead of posting date)? I know that Giganews retention is about 50 days, and it's kinda tedious to always calculate the delta (today-50) to see if I should even attempt a download or not. This is especially useful now that natural retention is not possible for compact binary groups.

A third thing (more of a request). Over the years I have used a number of programs, most of which supported logging of downloads to a descript.ion file (BNR, BNR2, Newsleecher, Newsbin, Newsgrabber etc. etc.). This is *very* useful, because by using a program that can read the descript.ion (such as ACDSee) you can *very* easily sort and organize the downloads.

Is it possible to add such descript.ion-type logging to UE. It would be fantastic! And it shouldn't be that time-consuming either--the code should be fairly trivial (descript.ion is a very simple ASCII file).

That's it for now. As I said, I am just starting evaluating UE (getting headers now) and I will post my impressions later.

Cheers.

Go into Properties for a newsgroup and the Articles tab. Turn on "log saved articles".

Then get the free NPDL from Mike Stammer (http://mikestammer.com/newspro/). It is much better then descript.ion files.
