Compact binary disadvantages

Ok, I know this has been discussed before, but I am trying to really get my head around the different newsgroup types.

My question is this: besides not being able to use "natural" retention, what else am I giving up with the CB type exactly?? I can still have threading in CB, right? If a newsgroup is mostly binaries and some text, can I still follow the text messages with the CB type? Can I read threads, replies, can I reply myself?

Is the loss of natural retention the biggest (or only) disadvantage of the compact binary type?

Thanks!

you can set retention (e.g. equal to the longest server retention) in properties->newsgroups even on per newsgroup basis if necessary, the retention is applied when newsgroup is loaded (if set in properties->general->apply retention automatically on load) or when you invoke 'apply retention' from the context menu in the newsgroups pane.
