'delete threads' means delete the whole discussion and future replies, if you delete any thread message ue will go up to the discussion original message, even if it is not there (the oldest available reference) and will mark further replies from being deleted as well.

delete headers&replies it starts from the header you are marking as deleted and its replies, but if it is not the root post the rest of the thread will be preserved, even if there is nothing there at the moment.
