UE stops...

I have this problem:
I run UE (registered) and start downloading some binaries.
After a while, the throughput goes back untill 0 kb/s.
When this happens I can also no longer access web pages with my browser.
Sometimes, my E-mail client can still connect to the server and collect mail. Other times it just times out.
After (and only after) I reboot, everything works normal again (for a while).
I use WinXP SP2 and Norton Internet security Antispam edition.
I connect through a cablemodem.
I've tried ipconfig /release, ipconfig /renew, but that doens't help.
Any ideas?

thanks,
ReSi.

maybe it is notrton settings?

try to disable it (jsut don't open any letters with attachments :) ) and check whether the problem is still there.

if email still works even sometimes, the networking is functioning so the problem is likely to be on your computer.

check on the internet for other reports about similar behaviour elsewhere, maybe you'll find a clue.

Check your network cabling!!!
Had the exact same problems here... wreaked havock on me for months!!!

Replaced my LAN wire to my machine.... no more problems!!

Remember no sharp bends, in cat5 I think the minimum acceptable radius is 9 inches.

Make sure your cable is cat5 approved and in good condition.
No twisted wire, no folds, no kinks....
Keep away from power cords and any power source.
Also avoid any metal supports or staples/nails.

I use a Cat 6 crossed , 1 foot long, cable between my cablemodem and a 100Mbit switch.
Another Cat6 cable, 3 feet long between the switch and my PC.
Both cables are rated to be used up to 550Mhz and are normally used for GigaBit ethernet. (too expensive for most other users)
I install network cabling for a living.. :)
I'll follow your advice though. It can't hurt but I don't think it will help.
I ONLY have this problem when running UE.

@ Alex: Disabling Norton doesn't work. Tried that already. I'm sure the problem is on my computer, I just need some clues, ideas on where to start looking.

@ Bassie: LOL My ISP is Telenet (belgium). Their helpdesk is limited to windows network settings and then some...

I'll search the Net and I'll let you know when I find a solution.

Thanks for your replies guys.

did the problem was there from the very beginning or it started at some point of time? if the latter what changed around the time in your software (more likely) or hardware configuration

if it is not too much trobule you could try to install a second copy of the fresh system without any third party applications except for necessary drivers and check whether the problem will happen there as well.

when you run setup from Windows there is somewhere in advanced an option to tell it you set it up to a different directory, otherwise it will overwrite the existing system.

Get rid of Norton. I run UE of a spare machine, no firewall, behind a router. Nothing else runs there, so all the features work. UE can also shut down the computer after download, no problems. All these problems are because of non system stuff that runs in the background and that is interfering.

I recommend to uninstall that Norton stuff (not just shut down). If everything works - get a better firewall.

It's definitly Norton. After leaving UE running for 4 days, sometimes getting headers, downloding bodies, both, searching :D , etc everything was fine. Just now it suddenly stopped. This is what Everest told me:

Log Name Event Type Category Generated On User Source Description
System Error None 2005-11-02 20:28:04 Service Control Manager 7034: The Symantec Network Proxy service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s).
