I want to have a global kill filter and was wondering if this is meant by Properties / Kill filters / Newsgroup List. If it is, why not simply name it Global?

What exactly is the Init Filter for?

Initial filter is the message filter which is applied when you open the newsgroup/folder. Message filters don't delete non-matching messages, they just hide them.
