Question about Newsgroup list

Post by adityanm »

For some reason the number of articles for each NG in the list is the same incorrect number.
Am I doing anything wrong?

do you mean subscribed newsgroups or newsgroup list (the list of all newsgroups on the servers)?

what is the number?

It is the list of all the newsgroups which shows 34483430 as the number of articles in each and every newsgroup.
I don't where it gets this weird number.

what is the news server? maybe to ask their support, something is wrong with the server. i've just downloaded newsgroup list from 3 different servers, no problem, it is a standard nntp command, if the number is wrong it might be some server problem.

here is an example of the raw list command (what server returns to newsreader):

LIST
215 Newsgroups in form "group high low flags".
alt.activism 0000385432 0000327369 y
alt.aquaria 0000110741 0000109702 y
alt.bbs 0000096752 0000089880 y
alt.config 0000154265 0000135954 y
alt.cult-movies 0000239154 0000219823 y
.

ue just uses the numbers which server supplies.

try to download newsgroup list from news.microsoft.com, the number of articles is ok? you can also reset newsgroup list in context menu->advanced->reset

It does not appear to be ISP dependent since Newsleecher gave
a different value for each line.
UE gave the one and same large value for each item which BTW
it different from the one that I had posted earlier. (It is 45......
this time)
======
PS: ON second attempt from a different ISP I did get correct values. Therefore I admit that it was ISP related issue.
++++
PPS:One more point in this context.
First ISP shows 33326 entries.
Second ISP shows 27905
The total in either case is 40350 even after I had rest old values.

maybe it is not a number then, maybe letters, wrong format, so it is interpreted differently by different programs (written with different programming tools) when read as a number.
