Newsgroup load aborted, the database would grow too large

Post by jsfarmer »

I got the following error message.
Newsgroup load aborted, the database would grow too large

1. How do i shrink the database so the software is usable again

2. How do i prevent this in the future?

are you using compact binary newsgroup destination type?

it is much more economical than other types, takes at least 10 times less RAM for the same amount of headers in binary groups. while using it usually one doesn't have to worry about RAM consumption, as to other types there is detailed explanation in help notes (UE.txt).

how much RAM do you have?

Ok, I'm sold on the idea.

Where do i change it? or verify the settings? I did not knowingly change the settings, but i have noticed the app went from taking 20-30 megs of memory to 637 now!!!! When would i even want to use anything but compact binary?

FYI, I have 1 gig of memory.

Compact binary is best for binary groups where you will be mostly downloading files and maybe read/reply here and there. *Especially* for very large binary groups, compact binary is a *must*.

Other types are better for mainly text/discussion groups where the most you expect to do is to post/read/reply to discussions (and maybe download/post a few files here and there.)

Up to now, you really needed two separate programs to do this. If you are rather new to Usenet you may not truly understand this, but believe me, that has been the case. UE is the *first* program in its class that fully supports both uses with no compromises. That's exactly the reason why there are different storage types in UE.

To verify the type of a newsgroup, go to Edit-Properties, then Newsgroups tab, select the newsgroup in the list and in that dialog, about 2/3rds down from the top you will see a line with the newsgroup name. To the right of that you will see its type.

Unfortunately, you can't "change" the newsgroup types after creating a newsgroup, as the different types use a different kind of database. You have to delete (unsubscribe) the newsgroup, and recreate it (resubscribe) again. When you do that, a dialog box pops up that allows you to specify the type.

No other program has these different storage types. None. It's pure genius. You will come to really appreciate it over time.

Hope this helps.

in properties->newsgroups, under the list you see the current newsgroup name (which is selected in the list), it is like a read only edit box.

to the right there is another edit box and you see there "article numbers", "message-id", "msg-id direct" or "compact binary"

it is the newsgroup type.

the newsgroup type is set on creation and cannot be changed afterwards (i just didn't add conversion if i did it would include full reset with keeping bodies).

if you see for large binary groups something else than 'compact binary' just create another set of subscribed newsgroups (it is easy if you use quick filter and make a matching string for newsgroup list in some editor), put another nick to discern them, when you create a new newsgroup select 'compact binary' as newsgroup destination type, there is combo box.

it is done only one time then you'll just use the new settings.

Well, that did the trick. I'm now down to 20 mb of memory usage.
Outstanding! The only reason i can figure that the option got changed is i was in a hurry and my mouse wheel got clicked accidentally on the first one, then it rememered the setting from there on out. I almost think you should have the default set to compact binaries, then if someone chooses another option have a "Are you SURE?" pop up.

I'm not new at newsgroups, been using them for about 11 years, but i tend to find a tool, figure out how to use the features i want, then just repeat. I AM new to UE and NP-only been using Alex's software for about a year and i have to say in the new multiserver/multiple account world it's great.

Thanks guys.

i'll make the type 'compact binary' always to appear initially with warning when you change the selection except for the case of multiple subscribtion from the newsgroup list view (so will be no need to change the selection when you subscribe e.g. to a number of text newsgroups).

Alex, good idea.

It is always best that the program suggests compact binary first.

Because sometimes after using a search (xpat) group, the message id is displayed and one might forget to select " compact binary"
