Firmware problem - between the chair and the keyboard...

G'day Alex and All...
about a week ago I was down to my last 400Mb on the drive !!
UE was installed on a 3Gig partioned drive which includes 8 multimedia players, (wish I could say it was on a dedicated drive..) but when I look at the drive through "file > properties" I can only account for about 200 Meg of files and data. Seriously... And defragmenting the disk does not help either....
The system is operating fine otherwise - there doesn't seem to be any indication of viruses etc.
And so, because I'm not ready to replace the firmware - not just yet anyway - my questions to the wider User Group (after looking through the topics already listed) are:
1. Is there any possiblity that UE is using all this space with old header/message info, or whatever, in hidden or otherwise inaccessible files - not maliciously of course, but purely because my settings have not been optimum and I've never used free / compact database etc etc..?
2. If so, what is the best way to remove the unwanted data (maybe 2.7Gig approx)?
3. What settings should I invoke on UE to keep the database size down in future?
(I'm a very simple person, step 1, step 2, would be very much appreciated...)
Most grateful for any assistance that anyone is prepared to offer..
Kind regards,
Peter.
