Bandwidth Counter Accuracy

I have a query regarding the bandwidth counter. I downloaded some big files in the last few days but the download counter is showing nowhere near what actually came down. I know for a fact I pulled down at least 20Gb but the counter is telling me I pulled just over 3Gb. Why would there be such a massive difference in numbers? Have I possibly got something set wrong?
