compact or compact and free

Post by Spooky »

This is an odd question since I have been using UE and Newspro for quite some time.

What is the exact difference between Compact and Compact and Free?

I never found a clear explanation in the documentation about the differences between the two.

Do old headers/bodies that I've downloaded or read get their tracks deleted?

I download from old time radio groups, and the text in these groups go back quite a ways even though they are binary groups. I don't want to lose the read markers off things I've downloaded before even though they are quite old.

I want to keep my database as small as I can considering what I actually hang on to data wise, and not re-download things because I can't tell if I've downloaded them already (marked read reference deleted).

Thanks.

actually no need to use those optons at all.

free related to memory consumption of the newsgroup but it is also done automatically.

compact compacts newsgroup storage on the disk, but since the storage is effectively reused - no need to invoke that as well, you may invoke it once in several months if you like. also compact happens automatically if you kill UE process with newsgroup open, when you reopen it and open the newsgroup you'll see "repairing...", the same is shown in the status bar when you invoke compact.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm always looking for ways to regain space because I'm low on disk space.

UE has been shutting down on start up because the space is below
90 Mb.

add another hard drive :)

check the size of bodies directory, edit menu->bodies, sort by age, if you see some old not needed downloads there delete them all.

compact is useful when newsgroup was large at some point but then it got much smaller.
