there was alarm here about the time when you wrote, i checked the server computer which holds pictures went low on RAM after daily automatic header maintenance (expiring older headers which happens around 0:00GMT).

the servers were running for about 15 days since last restart, just restarting it would reduce RAM fragmentation, but in addition i also disabled the backup function (which means keeping other groups as well, which is not really needed since there are additional backup options) which freed about 1GB of RAM. It is an old computer with 4GB RAM total, it was the original only server computer 3 years ago.

in the past it was running ok for a month with those backup settings (usually i restart it once in a month), maybe someone posted spam in picture groups or daily usenet volume rose, difficult to tell.

i'll update the search service monitor to issue alarm on too many users error as well, since usually it rather indicates low RAM so search requests take longer, it may happen while RAM is reclaimed from paging file after being excessively consumed on daily retention update around 0:00GMT.
