Hello Alex & forum members,

PROBLEM #1: Each Time I try a search I get: "Search failed, error communicating with server."

Problem #2: After using UE for a week, the UE database that I created is 233 GB. How do I refresh or reset the database??

Problem #3: How Do I set UE to it's defaults. Reinstalling doesn't seem to work.

Problem #4:(difficult to explain) I can't get to the second UE main screen.

Thanks for the reply's.

check UE version you are running help menu->about. if it is very old version with more than one search protocol change in between (actually it should be version from maybe more than one to two years ago) then it will give communication error instead of protocol changed.

if you use "download" or "download&save" without deleting files from UE database the UE db folder will grow.

you can see those article bodies stored in the UE database when you invoke edit menu->bodies, then you can delete them from there for example.

as to auto deleting bodies on save check settings in edit menu->properties->save/unpack, saving attachments, all those check boxes which related to deleting bodies/headers on save.

there is no immediate way to set UE to defaults, since settings are stored in the database, if you create a new database the settings will be default, then you can run a second instance (see below) and compare the settings with what you have now.

if you mean by second UE main screen running several UE instances you need to create a shortcut with parameter being a directory where the second UE database is located (you can run only one instance per database).

About your reply...! You are correct...!

Hello Alex, I followed your advice and you are correct...! I've been using UE version 1.8 - although I was sure that I was using the latest version.

I'll get the latest version and get back to you. Hopefully, my id & password will still work.

When you've upgraded, check to see that Properties->General->Miscellaneous->Check for updates is checked.

I still find it slightly irritating that you have to begin a download before UE will check for updates. I'd find it better, at least, to have a 'Check for updates' item in the Help menu to force a check or an option to check at each startup.

Whenever I queue up a large download and then UE informs me there is a new version, I'm always wary of shutting it down, upgrading and then restarting the download with a new version - I always like to finish the current download first before upgrading. Then, of course, I have to remember to upgrade. I know I probably don't need to do it this way but, nevertheless, it's the way I do things.

historically it was extremely safe to use newest releases, the last one is also ok.

Have you tried my Usenet Explorer Automatic Updater? It can inform you when there is a new update and it can download and install it if you like, before UE starts.

I'm just picky with things like this anyway and I've always done things the manual way. I know this kind of negates the point of having a computer that can automate everything for you...

I have a few copies of UE around: Usually one on a NAS that I can use from any computer, a local copy for quick downloads when the NAS is switched off and one on my girlfriend's account. Can you make your updater work with more than one copy, i.e. update all installed copies?
