v2.8.1 and Giganews accelerator

Post by joeleymard »

It appears version (2.8.1) and Giganews accelerator are not compatible.

I reverted to version 2.7 and it solved the issue.

Please check it !

Thanks

You can just use the giganews server directly without giganews accelerator, UE handles giganews compression itself exactly in the same way, adding the "accelerator" consumes resources and may also slow down the download/upload speed (e.g. when CPU usage is high and the additional process doesn't get enough CPU time).

If you want to keep their accelerator for whatever reason (there is no reason really) - uncheck edit menu->properties->general, compressed headers, xfeature (it is the name of the UE built-in accelerator functionality).

Giganews accelerator has a bug - when the newsreader supports the giganews header compression it lets compression commands through, but it fails to handle the returned compressed data stream. The compression is now almost universally supported by many providers along with the xzlib method, so UE doesn't check for "giganews" in the server name starting with v2.8.1.

Does the Giganews Accelerator use any specific Giganews server? For instance can I use the European Giganews server and get all the benefits of that, in conjunction with UE, with xfeature turned on, that I would get by just using the Giganews Accelerator and letting it use whatever server(s) it is setup with?

I'm currently using the accelerator, and have my Giganews server entry in Usenet Explorer pointing to localhost. Is there any way of editing this address anywhere in UE so I don't have to delete and add in either news or news-europe?

In UE Right-click the server then in the menu Advanced->Rename and change the server name and port.

Thanks for pointing that out. I assumed I could do it in the Properties window under Servers but that is greyed out. It's only possible to change the username and password there.
