Slow Header Downloading
Slow Header Downloading
Anyone know why header downloading is so slow, when I click on get new headers, doesn't it just get the headers that should be less than one day old, if I downloaded them the day before. Articles are fast but headers very slow, must have something set wrong, should I be downloading bodies with headers? Thanks
Re: Slow Header Downloading
This might be your usenet provider problem or firewall/antivirus issue, try to disable antivirus NNTP scanning or uncheck compressed headers in edit menu->properties->general to see if the download speed will be higher.
With compressed headers if provider supports compression UE shows two bandwidths in the status bar, the actual bandwidth and much higher uncompressed stream bandwidth.
If headers are not downloaded at all check what is the error message in the red question tab to the right of the Headers tab in the tasks menu->task manager.

Re: Slow Header Downloading
I made sure the virus scanner was not scanning the newsgroup downloads, fixed that, but compared to the only other newsreader I have is Newsleecher, downloading headers are taking way to long, hours to download headers, compared to minutes with the other Newsreader. Is the default in UE Unlimited Bandwith? That seems slow what I am seeing in UE.alex wrote:This might be your usenet provider problem or firewall/antivirus issue, try to disable antivirus NNTP scanning or uncheck compressed headers in edit menu->properties->general to see if the download speed will be higher.

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit 4 gig memory 2 500 gig HD.
Can I send you a couple of screen shots maybe when you have a chance you can see if something is set wrong.
THanks
Re: Slow Header Downloading
What is UE CPU usage when it downloads headers and what is the download bandwidth (status bar, maybe screenshot including tabs of task manager).
Also screenshot of edit menu->properties->general.
Every header download is slow whatever is the newsgroup size?
If there are errors during header download you should see number of retries growing in the task manager Headers tab, e.g. if there are timeouts associated because e.g. of antivirus/firewall interference and eventual error when retries are exhausted then naturally it will be slow.
Also make sure you use compressed headers (then you see two bandwidths in the status bar) since then downloading headers is 5-10 times faster.

Re: Slow Header Downloading
UC-3 is with Compressed Headers uncheckedalex wrote:What is UE CPU usage when it downloads headers and what is the download bandwidth (status bar, maybe screenshot including tabs of task manager).

UC-4 is with them off
There are no errors reported, the CPU is very low 1-2, virus scanner not monitoring the newsgroups.
It seems to run better with out compressing the headers.
Thank you

Re: Slow Header Downloading
There still may be some problem with antivirus interference.
For astraweb I get the same actual bandwidth speed for compressed and not compressed headers, it means maybe you should see 400K+ left and proportionally large bandwidth of uncompressed stream.
Are you using their SSL servers? Most likely not. The above wouldn't be a factor if this is SSL connection, since all the traffic is encrypted and random whether compression is enabled or not.
In the second servers pane of the workspace advanced->rename ssl-us.astraweb.com and ssl-eu.astraweb.com, check SSL, port 563 (port/SSL check box can be also changed in edit menu->properties->servers).
If you get the same slowness with SSL servers (with and without compression) must be some interference on your side if you see persistent difference with SSL it is some astraweb issue then.
