I used to have UE set with a low number under "retention/dates," and the result is there were older headers on the server I could not see. That was okay for when I was doing this.

Now I want to see all headers on all groups. Well, at least for now I do. So not being sure what to do, I changed "retention/dates" to 5000d (which is more than 10 years) to make sure I was exceeding whatever a server might have. I don't remember if I rescanned headers or not, but it seemed to pull in a bunch of headers from older messages.

3. Now I added a second server. And they have longer retention than my first server. But was not sure what to do. And I've confirmed that my server has headers I'm not showing in UE. I did this by searching for older headers using the UE search service.

Can someone tell me how to make sure I have all headers. I'm looking at the Rescan headers setting in the General tab, and it has two settings. I don't know what to do with them. And how should I set retention in the Server tab?

The new server would get headers according to your current retention settings.

UE search service doesn't retrieve headers from your server, it has its own header database, even if no server among your servers keeps the headers any longer it will still return them in search results.

It took me a long time to reply to this, because I wanted to confirm this. And it took awhile to find another problem. Here's what happens.

I use your search service and it finds the topic. I double click one message and it opens the message. If the message was not on provider's server, it would not be able to open it. I would not see the message and attachment. All I would get is the header from your server.

Now, after I open the message associated with the header, I open the newsgroup view in IE. The single header is there, but no other headers on that topic. If I double click another header that came from the search, the header and message will appear in the newsgroup.

IOW, I do not have all the available headers in header list for a news group. But I can make them appear by finding them first on your server, and double clicking on them. That's why I want to know how to tell UI to go back in and make sure it has all the headers from a newsgroup.

Also, oddly, these messages it is finding this way are not the oldest messages. They are just missing. So I want to get all headers again, but without losing what I have.

You can try to reset header ranges (workspace, newsgroup context menu, advanced) and then to download headers again.

But it is more likely your server has some problem with header database, they still keep bodies, but their headers are inconsistent.
