Speed of use

Post by shadok »

This may be a stupid question, but..... I've just installed NewsPro and am getting a feel for it.

I have my list of newsgroups that I've subscribed to. I have the newsgroups window in front of me and I right-click and select "Get New Headers". It takes ages, absolutely ages. This is not what I have experienced using other usenet programs, they seem to d/l headers in a flash (altough they don't do some stuff NewsPro does, hence the change).

I'm obviously doing something wrong.

Question is....what?

Cheers

You don't say whether it always takes a long time or if it's just the first attempt to download headers.

Consider your old usenet reader... It will probably only attempt to download new articles since the last time you connected.
With a new usenet reader it will ask for all and this can be a huge amount and take a long time and Newspro might be overwhelmed with tasks...

Maybe that's it. In which case set your properties for Newsgroups: 'Last headers per server' and 'Retention' accordingly.

Also I'd fetch headers one group at a time to start with if this is the first attempt to download headers for a new group. Close any superfluous windows: only have open what you are currently interested in looking at. The tasks continue even if you close the relevant group window but memory and processing power is freed up.
These suggestions might help and certainly improve working with Newspro for me.

Also you can go into the properties menu go to task tab and uncheck "prevent overload" when getting headers in groups that have over 40000 articles. Hope this helps ya.

Let me elaborate.

I know it can take ages to d/l new headers when you subscribe to a ng for the first time. This takes ages all the time. And it seems that I'm d/l'ing a lot of data, more than I would have thought.

That apart, it's a good little program!

How fast is your connection? Does newsPro max it out when DLing headers? It is pretty quick most of the time for me, but it all depends on who your providor is, your connection, and what the provider lets you do with their bandwidth
