Zone Alarm - Newspro stopped working

I can't get Newspro to download headers, articles, newsgoups, etc. It doesn't even try to access the internet now. The task queue just sits there.
I've tried the following:
1) Used another newsreader successfully to verify the servers are working. The servers are fine.
2) Disabled all firewalls, still doesn't work.
3) Created a new newspro database with my most reliable server, no change.
4) Reinstalled the newspro.exe program, no change.
Any ideas? It's not even generating a internet request because the firewall isn't even triggered when I start tasks in Newspro.
Short of doing a full reinstall of windows, which I'm not going to do, are there any other suggestions?

Is your firewall Zonealarm?
Newspro stopped working for me with the latest Zonealarm update (v.4.5)
had to go back to (v.4.0) to get Newspro to connect to the net again.

Yes it is! It must have updated automatically. I didn't think it was the problem since I shutdown Zone Alarm, and still had the problem. I'll contact them now. Thanks!

The problem is definitely from the ZoneLabs 4.5 upgrade. I followed the canned response ZoneLabs sent for configuring the firewall with newsreader programs, but that didn't help. Is there something different about Newspro that won't let it work with the new version of ZoneAlarm Pro? All of my other internet software is working fine. (Includiing the Outlook Newsreader).

I have the exact same problem as the original poster, but I do NOT have firewall installed, other than my router which hasn't changed for over a year.
Other newsgreaders work fine.
Rebooted, restarted, cleared out NewsPro database. All no help.
I'm stuck, any ideas?
regards,
Michael

Its true the new version of zonealarm stops newspro. I see it in the logfile.
I could not get it to work even while manualy adding newspro to zonealarm. Installing the old version did not succeed eather.
I use another (free) firewall now (sysgate) that works and it looks even better then zonealarm
Did someone already told Zonealarm that it blocks Newspro.

I already sent an email to Zone Labs, all I got back was a canned response on how to configure the firewall for newsreader programs.
What's odd is that starting Newspro doesn't even bring up the manual allow/disallow box in Zone Alarm.
Checking the Zone Alarm log file, newpro is blocked the moment its launched. No explanation is given why it's blocked, and no IP address is listed in the log file.
zonealarm is the culprit

I had the same problem after upgrading Zonealarm...I uninstalled Zonealarm and installed Sygate's free firewall and the world is good!
Get it from
http://smb.sygate.com

Same thing here....I went back to ZoneAlarm 4.0.146.029.
Something else though.. I started and stopped ZoneAlarm 4.5 six times, then checked the Task Manager in Win2K Pro. No Apps were running but NewsPro was listed in the running Processes six times....and would NOT terminate.

if it is listed several times (you launched it with the same profile) - it is on the stage of the application initialization or application exit, since in the very beginning newspro checks that the same profile is not running and exits if so, so most probably it is in a dll (most probably zone alarm), since such a dll initalization goes before and cleanup goes later relative to executing the application code.

The last version of Zonealarm pro is ok.
It works with that version, I tested, and in the forum somewhere else other people say it works.
Anyway i am using the free sygate personal firewall now, and i stick to that one at the moment.

it might be also some other dll, does it happens every time you restart the system? if so when it started happening - maybe you remember what you installed/upgraded back then?
