I created a new group #xpat, opened and get new headers. The dialog comes up and I put in *proposed* for subject, entered the newsgroup and set it off. On both UNS servers it returns nothing. I know there is a discussion thread there so I broke out xnews, did the same thing and it returns 46 messages. Am I overlooking something?

try to uncheck case-insensitive search (unless xnews allows such a search); if 'substring' is checked no need to put asterisks since newspro will put them itself, in both cases it would indicate a server bug, otherwise i don't see any difference (unless you mistyped the newsgroup name or disabled the search string).
