Corrupt downloads

Post by Gul »

Hi Alex,

lately I have been getting lots of corrupt downloads of big (15MB) rars. Could this be related to NP? When I redownload these files they eventually work. Today I had to redownload a file for the 4th time to get it right. Out of 56 Files I usually end up having between 5 an 20 corrupt files.

It cannot be connected to newspro itself.

If you download from several servers maybe you have one server that produces corrupted downloads, it might be a temporary problem with the server. You can save part sources of a partial message (disable partial autosupport in the partial menu) for a corrupted download (don't delete bodies when you save attachments to be able to check the parts), then if you see a non-last part of a different size - open its source in a text editor and look into the path or xref field to find out from which server it came. Then disable the server, it is unlikely several servers will simultaneously develop the problem.

If you see corrupted files coming from different servers on a random basis - it might be something messing with winsock like firewall.

It is not possible that download has been interrupted in the middle since then newspro won't accept it.

And in the end (doesn't look like your case since you have different results with different downloads - unless you downloaded headers in between) if you see duplicate parts where half is garbage when you disable partial autosupport it is an attack, in the development section there is a version (supercedes in the subject of the post - it works, just no much feedback on the topic so I didn't release it as v3.63) that allows to abort downloads based on arbitrary headers, although if you have all genuine parts even without the option newspro has logic to ignore the spam posts.

I hope so.

I only download from one server - news2.premium-news.de. But I will investigate your advice.

Actually, I have just changed firewall from Symantec to ZoneAlarm Pro v3.7.159. I will investigate in that, too. I think that is the most probable cause for this.

That is what i would have thought.

News Pro has so much, they will probably put up a learning course at keystone or learnkey with at least 4 CDs of 'Learning News Pro 4'

yes, with one server you cannot tell whether it is a server or not, it might be firewall.

zonealarm is the most problematic firewall, i had to add code the last autumn to catch crashes it could produce (they were coming from inside winsock when zonealarm - its version at the time - was installed), it has a history of problems, although eventually they were fixing them, new problems appeared from time to time.

Thank you for your advice.

Before I cut off Zonealarm, about half of downloaded files are corrupted.
After I cut of Zonealarm, every downloaded files are good. :D :D

I've too seen that ZoneAlarm can cause corrupted downloads, but not all. The trend for me is that, of the ~10% corrupted segments I get, if they are hit or miss, turning off ZA doesn't help. However, when, like you, one particular post (downloaded from several Newsfeeds servers) has up to 50% corruption (which happens very rarely, BTW), turning off ZA definitely is the answer.

thanks for the info on the firewall corrupting files. it was really frusterating seeing a file be large by 2 bytes and nothing i can do except download another 50 MB file! :x but i digress...

does anyone know if there is a good firewall out there that doesn't mess with newspro?

thanks in advance. laters
