Astraweb & message ID's
Astraweb & message ID's
After xpat search i can see that lots of binaries are waiting for me
at Astraweb.
When i start with downloading i cannot get any of these binaries thru Astraweb.
Where they messing with the message ID's at Astraweb?

I subscribed to their free acount, indeed they have such a problem, I reported it. It is likely shortly there will be an option to handle such server problems when downloading from folders (several newsgroups merged in one window) but not for xpat groups, with usual newsgroups newspro handles it ok.
If it is a server bug it shouldn't be indulged since there is no way the message-id direct option will work then. I'll try to track it down to the server they are using, I suspect it is the same type of server so maybe it could be eventually rectified through the server designers.

Here is their reply, it is true, I checked it, they list headers that actually don't have bodies. I checked it on news.software.readers, they list articles starting with March, 6 but only articles beginning with March, 10 have bodies - the same result with xpat and downloading directly from the newsgroup, I don't know why, maybe this is how the server handles the lack of its disk space. Just people instilled in me corrupted message-id server indices and I couldn't think about anything else
At least they are talking, no reply from usenetserver.com
Dear Alex,
This is due to the headers being expired later than the bodies.
Sometimes this happens when the expiry of the headers comes after the
expiry of the bodies. So, this problem only occurs for older articles.
Thank you.

Thanks for the help Alexalex wrote:I subscribed to their free acount, indeed they have such a problem, I reported it.

But i think its strange when i compare the result from the xpat on my payserver and Astra.
They both produce the same amount of headers but with Astra i can download absolutely nothing..
and the articles are not even 1 day old.

I also download lots of headers with Gravity, and after it use the "complete binaries" filter from Gravity ,try to decode the articles ->no luck,
and all the parts where there.
Also it looks that Teranews have changed something because there i also cannot download anything anymore after xpat searching, its just the same.
All headers are there but when i try to download NewsPro is producing
error messages "Error NewsPro - receive timeout error (20011)"
This error comes up imediatly after i start a fresh download.
On the other hand Bubbanews is still going rocksolid strong.
Is Bubba not the same server like Teranews?
Wow,lots of strange thingies going on in bunnyland

Anyway, thanks for your good reader Alex

Mighty fine job you did,and i am spreading the message.

Well.........,its a free servicealex wrote:It is unusual to have such a large number of headers without bodies, I think they experienced some problem with the disk space and the server dumped older bodies to accomodate the latest ones, probably as to the header lists it still maintained predefined retentions although it doesn't make sense.

I gues i get what i payed for

And again for some time now,no downloads from Tera/Bubba.alex wrote:It is unusual to have such a large number of headers without bodies, I think they experienced some problem with the disk space and the server dumped older bodies to accomodate the latest ones, probably as to the header lists it still maintained predefined retentions although it doesn't make sense.
Thru xpat i can find all my headers (after verry long wait)
When i try to download bunnies i get "no such article"
I wonder if i configged NewsPro maybe wrongly

Maybe settings wrong for Tera?

Damn...these screendumps look a lot better on my system

i'm not sure astraweb now has this issue, probably it was better to post in a different thread, because if the issue had been resolved (i heard astraweb had an upgrade) - this thread is outdated.
as to teranews it may be 2 things - either the messages are missed completely or it is a la usenetserver problem - corrupted message-id index.
to find out what it is - look for the messages on www.binaries.nl, then download them in a usual newsgroup. if you are able to download bodies from there - it is the server corrupted message-id index problem (forget about message-id direct too then).
actually the best way to address such questions is to contact the news service support whether you are using the free account or not since it affects all their users, they will be only thankful. most services (except for UNS) are very sensitive to such reports and are able to fix everything within one day (repairing the server indices).

Yes indeed,it was better to start a news thread because Astra is working verry well after the server upgrade.

Yep, this offcourse is a proper method to see if its a message ID related problem.
Only problem is that i have a download limit,so downloading headers from my favorit group would be costly for my download quota.
So i better search for a low used group first.![]()

I think this is the best way to find out what is going on with Tera/Buba.
If they could deliver a decent reply with a solution that could be nice.
Thanks for the help Alex,i am gonna look in to this and keep you informed.

From teranews.com:
6/01/2003 - Some users are reporting problems when retrieving headers. If you receive a 501 error code about 'XHDR' it is due to us disabling that command. The XHDR command is no longer supported due to the extremely high server load it causes. The XOVER command is the correct method for retrieving headers. The XHDR command causes 5 times the server load as the XOVER and they both do the same job. There should be a way to disable the use of the XHDR command in your news client.
