Missing Newsgroups in Newsgroup List

Post by Newssearcher »

Hi all,
after my subscription to Newsfeeds and Easynews I'm using Newspro now which for me is the greatest Newsreader on the market. I have read all postings here carefully and also everything I could get on the Easynews and Newsfeeds forums concerning Newspro. But unfortunately I have no clue to solve a strange situation which I have concerning my Newsgroups list (maybe a typical Newbie handling error):

I configured all Newsfeeds servers (Max. connections per server: 3) and also Easynews (max connections: 6). For a first try I gave all servers the same priority "100" (this will be changed that soonly). Also no "Msg ID direct", no "Suppress get headers".

Then I generated the Newsgroup list (Open & get new newsgroups): Everything seemed to work fine. In total I have 64444 Newsgroups in the list, for Easynews 39896 groups are counted in the server line. Then my problem began:

Looking for the Newsgroup "de.comm.provider.suche" I could not find it in my list. A cross check using Agent showed that this Newsgroup is offered at least by Easynews (I did not check Newsfeeds) including the headers. So for "news.easynews.com" I activated the command "Reset Newsgroup list for the server" and afterwards "Open & get all Newsgroups" (with the Easynews server highlighted). The system began to fetch the Newsgroups from Easynews - but when about 2000 Groups have been found the Activity column in the Task Manager window was already at about 50 %. Then it jumped within 1 or 2 seconds to 100 % and the number of Newsgroups for Easynews also jumped from about "2000" to "39896" within 1 or 2 seconds. It seems that the other Newsgroups have not been fetched at all from the Easynews server (especially the Newsgroup mentioned as an example is still missing).

Is there maybe any space restriction in the database leading to a limit concerning the maximum number of newsgroups?? Or did I forget to set an important parameter to a specific value??? Did you ever had such a situation?

All experiences, ideas, hints and suggestions are highly appreciated (working now for 2 evenings on that). What could I do or what could I check ???

Many thanks in advance.

Best regards

ensure that properties->general, force server authentication is checked, it is default now but several months ago it wasn't, a server may supply different newsgroup list for non-authenticated mode.

also invoke edit menu->show deleted headers (here 'headers' means 'newsgroups'), maybe you'll see it there if not try to 'get all newsgroups (latest article numbers)' again.

it is very simple command, there can be no problems, probably you accidentally deleted the newsgroup.

Hi Alex,
first a big 'thanks' for your incredibly quick reply.

'force server authentication' was checked. But edit menu->show deleted headers did the trick :D :D All missing Newsgroups have occured now. I have undeleted them and now my list is complete (114181 Newsgroups now - including all the garbage with 0 postings). Many thanks for that, Alex.

The only question left for me is: How could it have come to these deleted Newsgroups because I have definitely not deleted any Newsgroup. Do you have any idea what I maybe should do or avoid in the future ? Can it e.g. be that my "Reset Newsgroup list for the server" has deleted all Newsgroups which have only been linked to this server?

newspro doesn't delete headers/newsgroups by itself (unless you defined something in properties->kill filters for newsgroup list). you could delete them a long time ago (e.g. accidentally pressed alt+x), even if you reset newsgroup list or database newspro will remember deleted headers/newsgroups, you need to undelete them explicity (deleting del.dat after database reset would achieve the same).

Alex, I think I identified the reason now. Many days ago (directly after installing NewsPro) I 'played' a little bit with the program to test the consequence of some parameters etc. At the end of this playing phase I deleted everything which I had (e.g. all Newsgroups, all servers ...) and wanted to begin from scratch again in this way. Afterwards I did not delete anything as I already said.

I did not realize that the deleted entries from my playing phase could not be 'overwritten' by new entries (open &get all newsgroups) because the deleted entries were still in the DB. Is this interpretation correct?
