Why is my database folder taking up 5GB? (Help!)

Post by kazzy »

Seriously.

This thing is taking up WAY too much room on my drive, and I can't figure out how to shrink it. I have all the settings set up to delete/purge headers and whatnot, and it doesn't do squat -- everything just stays in the folder.

Is there some sort of option I need to set in order ot have it clear that folder out?

Thanks
Dan

More info?

5 GB is a lot. I'm getting headers from between 5 and 9 servers (depending on the newsgroups each server has available), subscribed to approximately 30 high header-count groups and my approximate size is still only 500 MB or so.

One thing you may want to try is make a global filter for all messages with bodies and save/delete those bodies. I had that similar problem and realized with the help of the global I downloaded a ton of binary attachments and forgot about them.

How many servers are you downloading from and how many groups are you subscribed to?

Around ten. All of them are binary groups. :)

Still can't figure out why the database is so big (or why it even needs to be)...

invoke 'partial menu->delete bodies of partials with missing parts in all groups', maybe it will help, ensure 'partial menu->delete such bodies from time to time' is checked (it will delete them about once in 10 days).

as to the rest refer to this topic:

no help there.

Nope, didn't make a difference. It's still taking up 5GB.

Is there a difference between "Download Attachments" and "Download & Save Attachments"?

I've been using the latter, so maybe thats causing the problem?

Thanks

You didn't reply to Dan's suggestion about looking for messages with bodies. One thing to remember on Usenet, people post stuff over and over, and if two messages happened to have the same attachment, Newspro would only save one to your hard drive and keep the other in its database (I think). Happens to me all the time when I'm trying to piece together a VCD from several days worth of posts (there will be all kinds of redundant files).
Every now and then, I reset the database, turn off the filters, open the newsgroups, and find all kinds of stuff that I manually delete the bodies to. I could do it without resetting the database, I guess, I just feel better when I do.

what is exactly the problem? it is all in the topic accessed through the link.

you invoke 'edit menu->global filter', messages are with bodies, 'extract', 'close'. wait until it will finish database scan.

to see every body uncheck partial menu->autosupport... and threads menu->enable threads.

then if you don't need anything - invoke all headers->delete bodies from the context menu.

there is a slight difference if you use download and save afterwards instead of download&save, the latter works through automation when it won't save if there is any problem and will leave it for manual save, with 'save' it will take into account properties->general, saving mode, so you can instruct it e.g. to rename or overwrite attachments (but still nothing is deleted if it couldn't save).

Alex, I think about the only way the database could get that size is by having some file attachments downloaded, but not saved. He's using the download and save option, but may have downloaded duplicates of some files, and Newspro won't save them twice to the same folder, it'll hold them. My reply to him basicly floated this possibility, since I've done it myself.

It probably is easier to just filter down to Messages with Bodies and delete the ones that are not needed. If he doesn't find a bunch of files when this is done, then I have no more ideas. I have the biggest movie groups and the biggest mp3 groups in one database, 14 day retention, with accounts at Newshosting, Newsfeeds, and Newsreader, and the total comes to 745 mB.
