I am unable to delete servers (they keep coming back!)

Post by SteveTank »

I have a long list of what used to be free-open servers that no longer work. I am in the habit of just disabling non-operating servers. But now I want to clean house and remove the ones I don't use anymore.

However, every efforts I have made to delete them are undone on restart. They all come back. I can clear out the newsgroup list and public servers, but the servers tab still shows them all.

I even tried removing the data directory and all it's sub folders and making a new database directory fresh. I don't know where it draws its information from. Those servers still keep coming back.

help! I'm registered using v3.62

thanks,

Steve

Probably you tried to delete server that has active running tasks, you exited the program before that tasks have been completed/aborted, if a server has active tasks newspro just removes the server from the list, cancel its tasks and waits until they exit and only then deletes the server.

Thanks for the reply, but no, that's not resolving it. And we're talking about around 20 servers, most of which have been disabled for 6 months or more.

I just tried to do a cancel all tasks and deleted 5 servers. They promptly came back on restart. I've also switched databases to a new db and the darn things are still there, impossible to delete.

I removed the reg file thinking the info was contained in there, but no change. What file contains these servers? Is it in the registry?

Thanks,

Steve

it goes through the registry, maybe you have something on your computer that prevents deleting registry entries?

if it is default profile, servers are in HKEY_CURRENT_USER->Software->Albir->NewsPro (if not default profile - profile name)->Data->Servers->IDs and Names.

While the program is running you see servers there. after you exit the program - the 'IDs and Names' key should be gone (press F5 to refresh in regedit).

also when you delete a server it should disappear in the list in the 'IDs and Names' registry key

if it is not gone you have something there that messes with the registry, when the program restarts it also cleans the key (since it may be another database), if you deleted reg.dat, nothing should be there, so it is very strange, looks like something doesn't allow newspro to delete from its data area in the registry (some kind of overzealous registry/antivirus protection?).

I think I figured out the problem. I was running this on a Windows 2000 server with Terminal Services enabled. However, I only ran Newspro via the console, never through the TS client.

I uninstalled Terminal Services and now it's all working fine.

Thanks for the suggestions and help.
