This is happening after you select File>Switch database?

yes, but then i could only choose for making a new database. i chose that just to give it a try. next thing as i start up newspro nothing shows up. not in the new or the old database. But when i look in explorer all the files in the old database are still there, they just do'nt show up in newspro.

When you open it do a file->switch database to the directory you are looking at in explorer. The directory you are looking for should contain files such as reg.dat.

the map i choose in newspro is the same that contains the files in explorer.
it just doesn't show in newspro and i don't know why, and what is needed to get it back.

You should NOT select the folder that contains the reg.dat !
You should select the folder that contains the DATA folder.
IE: If you installed newspro in C:\Program files\NewsPro you should select that same folder as database folder.
All information will then automatically be put in the C:\Program files\NewsPro\Data folder and a backup (if enabled) in the C:\Program files\NewsPro\Copy folder.
If this doesn't work chances are files got damaged and you will have to re-enter server and newsgroup info.

i just got the problem solved myself.
comparing the new database
with the old one it came out that the old database with downloads and the other stuff like reg.dat had moved to the ../data map and the ../data/data map contained new files like reg.dat
So i solved it by moving all the files in ../data to ../data/data, thereby replacing files with the same name (like reg.dat)
just one question for myself remains: how did it get messed up ??
(hoping i clearly explained the issue here)

It messed up because you selected the Newspro\data folder as database.
If newspro doesn't find a Data folder in the selected database folder it creates one.
If you had selected the Newspro\ folder as database folder it would have found the exsisting Data folder and use the info in there.
I hope it's a bit clear. It's not so easy to explain without it looking like a complicated story

Or, to put it another way, each database folder contains Data, Copy and Temp folders (they are created automatically when making a new database). So, the default Newspro database folder is: <drive>:\...\Newspro.
